Exxon lobby group named "year's most influential" in global climate change

The US Weather Channel's “climate change mission statement ” reads: “Throughout the world, people are confused about climate change and global warming, [the Weather Channel] will provide a place where sound science can be heard.”

As regular DeSmog readers know, much of the confusion and doubt in the general public around the issue of climate change and the discussion around “sound science” has been at the hands of industry and oil company funded front groups. Such groups serve the purpose of doing and saying the things a modern day corporation cannot …

Industry "think" tank cherry-picks to prove point

Here is a great example of spin, this time by the oil-money backed Media Research Centre and it's affiliated group “NewsBusters.” The goal of the intrepid team at Newsbusters is to “expose and combat liberal media bias.” Well, here's a little bias from News Busters themselves.

According to a recent UK Telegraph story, an upcoming report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will claim that “mankind has less of an affect on global warming than previously supposed.” A leading UK climate scientist explains that this downgrade is a refinement simply “due to better data on how the climate works rather than a reduction in the risk posed by global warming.”

Far from being the whole story, the Telegraph article goes on to paint a pretty grim picture indeed, but Newsbusters would like us all think something quite different…

Check out ThinkProgress for another take on this.

"Climate change" and "Kyoto" deemed no, no's for government scientists

Colorado's Rocky Mountain News adds two more bits to the government muzzling of climate change science file today. Pieter Tans, a senior scientist at NOAA's lab in Boulder says that he was banned from using the word “Kyoto” four years ago and more recently banned from talking about “climate change” at a carbon dioxide measurement conference.

Bye, bye Inhofe

The climate change denial circus created by Senator James “global warming is a hoax” Inhofe, outgoing chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee has finally come to an end, but not, of course, without some final choice quotes. As reported earlier this week on DeSmog, Inhofe took one last stab at sowing doubt about the realities of global warming and chose again to make the US media the target.

HuffPo has a good take on the Inhofe circus.

Oprah touts Exxon/Ford lobbyist as climate change "expert"

While Oprah is to be congratulated for her “Global Warming 101” special yesterday, it is discouraging to see Competititve Enterprise Institute's Marlo Lewis being touted as an “expert” in the science of climate change. As regular readers of DeSmog know, the CEI has been one of the leaders of the industry-backed war on climate change science. Further, Marlo Lewis is NOT a climate change expert, he is a lobbyist/PR pro with no scientific credentials. To be fair, Oprah also includes other non-scientists like Leonardo DiCaprio as a source on climate change, but last time we checked Leo is not part of an industry-funded campaign, he is speaking for himself.
