Oil funded Heartland pleads innocence

The Heartland Institute, a notorious US climate change skeptic group, responded to a letter the DeSmogBlog team recently penned for the Philadelphia Daily News. Creating a perception of impartiality is their theme on the issue of tobacco and climate change science. Is it then just a coincidence that the same groups funded by oil money, such as Heartland, are the same groups “skeptical” about climate change?

Stossel and Scarborough love fest, also a misinformation fest

There is nothing more scary than two journalists interviewing each other, except maybe when both the journalists are armed with bad information and ideological blinders. In a bizarre spot last night on MSNBC’s “Scarborough Country” we were witness to ABC’s John Stossel and host Joe Scarborough spouting a continuous stream of PR spin and misinformation on the issue of climate change.

Teachers be warned: Tim Ball wants your kids!

Now if the media circus wasn’t enough, the right-wing Canadian think-tank Frontier Centre for Public Policy is now selling a resource for teachers based on the scientific wisdom of Dr. “CFCs were never a problem” Ball, chief spokesman for the Alberta-based Friends of Science.

The production date is 2004, so for many this might not be a new story, but the DeSmogBlog team believes it is never to late to draw attention to some of the PR propaganda that is floating around out there.

We are wondering if any teachers are actually showing this in Canadian schools, if any of our faithful readers know, we would love to hear about it. Might be a cool DeSmogBlog t-shirt or something in it for some good information.

More to come…

Who are we to believe? Gore or Heartland Institute?

Joseph Bast, president of the Heartland Institute, wrote an opinion piece that appeared in today’s Philadelphia Daily News, asking readers whom they would believe, Al Gore or scientists.

It is interesting to observe that the cadre of scientists Bast refers to as proof that Gore is wrong seems to be getting smaller and their collective expertise in the area of climate change continues to diminish as more and more jump off the climate denial bandwagon. For instance, Bast claims Tim Ball, former professor at the University of Winnipeg, to be an “expert” on climate change, when in fact Dr. Ball has not published any research in a peer-reviewed science journal in the last 20 years.

All this becomes even more questionable when you question the source of this article, Joseph Bast himself.

Jewish Bulletin's Wes Pruden: stop reading press releases and start reading science

Washington Times Editor in Chief Wes Pruden’s rant today in the Western Jewish Bulletin shows a blatant lack of understanding of the scientific process and highlights the fact that some people, no matter how many studies and reports by the world’s top scientists verify the science behind man-made climate, will never accept that it is happening.
