Environment California delivered over 2,500 public comments to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) today at a state-held workshop to discuss measures to reduce global warming pollution pursuant to last year’s landmark law.
Led by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California adopted the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which commits to an economy-wide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. The law assigns primary responsibility for meeting the statewide cap to CARB.
By June 30, California must list “early-action measures” that can be implemented before the state adopts a comprehensive plan to ensure the 2020 emissions-reduction target is met. The workshop was held to inform the public and stakeholders on early-action measures and to solicit public comments. CARB and the Climate Action Team each released early-action draft proposals last week.
Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.
There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
