Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.
There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
Wow! Something sensible from
Wow! Something sensible from Nikiforuk in DemSmog. I'm overwhelmed. Conservation of a diminishing resource makes a lot of sense in its own right, without reference to the hocus pocus of AGM and, with the wildly inflated price of natural gas, it makes a lot of economic sense.
Governments (both federal and provincial) love the idea of CCS which burnishes their green credentials, will cost billions and will provide only the limited benefit of enhanced oil recovery from a few wells with characterisics favourable for the process (as in southeastern Saskatchewan where the technology is already employed.)
The ancient Egyptians wasted their resources building pyramids. Modern western societies dream up grandiose projects to control the climate.
That's "...hocus pocus of
That's "...hocus pocus of AGW..." .Sheesh.
Heh
Zog, thats the whole point of BioFuels, Hydrogen and Sequestration.
They are all supposed to superficially sound great, while at the same time being so impractical that they won't ever be expected to be implemented.
It's great cover for industries and politicians that want to appear like they are doing something, but in reality just want to maintain the status quo.
Ahlport, I hope that you're
Ahlport,
I hope that you're right. Smoke and mirrors are relatively harmless and don't cost much. Unfortunately, in the case of biofuels, millions have already been spent (billions south of the border) in subsidies, with no end in sight. I predict that the $2 billion announced by the Govt. of Alberta will indeed be spent in pursuit of the chimera.
Heh, again
==Smoke and mirrors are relatively harmless and don't cost much.==
I wouldn't be so certain about that.

You forget that they have to be convincing.
Ahlport, Link doesn't work.

You have to resize/click the image. It's big.

Politics vs. sound simple solutions
People should be outraged that billions are being wasted like this, when such a sound, sensible, doable-today and bloody cheap answer is sitting right under our noses.
"...under our noses." And
"...under our noses."
And that is?
Live it up, Zog
And, just for a change of pace, read the article before you comment.
Richie, I guess that my
Richie, I guess that my sarcasm went of your head. Next time I'll use the sarc on sarc off for slow thinkers routine.
Large scale solar energy? Jesus Christ! The writer's of that article could use a little exposure to elementary mathematics. Just for openers, a 1000Mw nuclear power plant would fit quite comfortably on 15 hectares. A solar-thermal installation of equal capacity would require about 40 square kilometers to accomodate a few hundred thousand tons of construction material - mostly energy intensive concrete, aluminium, glass and steel plus an actual 1000Kw power plant.
"of your head" = "over your
"of your head" = "over your head"
"an actual 1000 Kw power plant" = "an actual 1000 Kw power plant"
Oh, hell.
AN ACTUAL 1000Mw POWER
AN ACTUAL 1000Mw POWER PLANT!
I think that I need a vacation from retirement.
