CBC's 5th Estate slams the "Denial Machine" tonight

For all you Canadian DeSmog fans, tune in at 9pm to CBC's 5th Estate for a special documentary on the climate change “denial machine.” Watch the likes of Fred Singer, Tim Ball and Pat Michaels squirm in the media hot seat.

For our US readers, not to worry, I'm sure this piece will get popped on YouTube pretty darn quick.

That is really good to see them exposed, more than they have been, and Jim Hoggan and others did a great job when they were interviewed. Congratulations to all. But honestly, the news media were a huge asset to the climate science deniers over the years, and I mean right up to last week. When Sir Nicholas Stern’s report came out, I tuned in to CBC radio (Calgary). Who is the one person they interviewed? An ‘expert’ from the FOS/NRSP, who denied it. The next day I tuned in again, and who does CBC go to for more comment? A different ‘expert’ denier from FOS/NRSP. Wow, two out of two, a consensus, supplied by CBC. Go to www.cbc.ca and search Tim Ball. They have built him up as an expert for years, apparently more authoritative and credible than government scientists and academic researchers. The newspapers have done an even better job (even if you don’t count the Nat Post). This is great that the news media has discovered that the deniers in Canada are not exactly as advertised, but was this not obvious year ago? - Dan
I watched tonights show. Talk about innacuracies and false statements. Here are just a few little questions for those of you who blindly jumped on the Kyoto bandwagon. It seems that the David Suzukis do not wish to talk about them or to enlighten the public. .Is the world’s climate continually evolving? .What brought about the end of every ice age to date? .Is it true that if global warming had not occurred in the past, that our lands would be covered with a thousand feet of ice? .Did humans cause the global warming that brought about the end of the previous ice ages? .To what extent are we able to effect the world’s climate? .Would compliance by all of the signature countries to the Kyoto Agreement reduce global warming? .Is it true that recent discoveries by some British scientific researchers regarding the changes which may be occurring in the ocean currents, in the Atlantic Ocean in particular, are caused by water temperature changes occurring? These scientific researchers installed temperature and ocean current measurement devices across the Atlantic, from early data, they believe that it may be, that such ocean current changes, EG ‘the Gulf Stream’, may in time cause and may have in past history, been the cause of Europe’s ice ages. This suggests that it may just be too early for the world to be jumping on the Kyoto band wagon and that we as a world society should do more due-diligence (scientific study) before renegotiating then implementing this extremely out of balanced agreement on world action against climate change. .Is it true that the Liberals plan for Canada to comply with the Kyoto targets involved the purchase of perhaps several billion dollars worth of “carbon credits” from some under developed Asian and European countries?- .If Canada were to purchase “carbon credits”, would it result in lower emissions of green house gases or pollutants in Canada? .Would it result in a reduction of global green house gas or pollution? .Would the purchase of “carbon credits” have an impact on Canada’s economy? .Is it true that many third world countries will profit financially from the Kyoto agreement whether or not there are any positive effects on climate change? .Has the IGCC panel considered the suggestion (hypothesis) that an accelerated melting of the Greenland ice cap could put a cover of fresh low density water over the adjacent northern ocean thereby shutting down the gulf stream, as the present salty dense cold water would not be able to drop down to bottom of the ocean, which presently allows the warm gulf to extend to the north? If it is true, then global warming could shut down the N. Atlantic circulation and precipitate the next ice age. Of course then Europe might just be wanting global warming. But this is only one of many hypotheses out there. .Is it true that the only scientific group to study and track climate change for more than recent history is the geological community? .Do geologists agree with the Kyoto protocol? .How many of the Kyoto fear mongers were also in panic mode with the Y2K bug? .How many Kyoto advocates can truly answer these questions, and how many can refute them with plausible , rational answers? I am waiting to see.

So, Mr. anonymous: I see I have someone to agree with. I
see not all canadians are sucked in by the big green vac.
and the global warmism. Like it’s been going on for like
forever, eh! I live in Michigan and we have our share of
kyoto-nuts here also. We have a few towns that tried to
do the al gore thing and eliminate bbqs on certain alert
days. Like, that didn’t go with the bbq crowd and it was
able to be enforced…
And the snow we got? what global warming! I bet a lot of
eco-tree-hugging geeks aren’t whining about global warming
now! Some of them should be persuaded now that the global
warming deal is just a big fiasco cooked up by a bunch of
bored geeky tree-hugging scientists that managed to suck
in al gore with their big green vacuum. LOL, eh! So may
you have a great summer and some good barbie days ahead,eh!

I just need to correct one of the lines(like it was
correct before it got posted.some geeky eco-gremlin must
have frigged with it, eh?!

where it said able to be enforced, should read NOT able
to be enforced.

maybe the little eco-gremlins won’t frig with it this time….

There is far too much money being made to take this as more than just another money maker for the greedy.

Fact or Fiction
Global warming or climate change? I can believe in climate change as that has happened in the past, wasn’t all of Canada covered in ice at one time and before that it was lush and green? Who are these scientists and how credible are they? Just because they are called scientists or “experts” can they be trusted? How much do we really investigate what is being said? In a world of greed I am finding it very hard to trust the words of the “experts” and “scientists”. Far too much money is being made and we as people are being nickel and dimed to death by companies and tax by our government as we have been conditioned for years by a lie. We accept things without looking into it and we believe what we are fed and greed thrives on that.

I recently read about a study Readers Digest Canada did on several thousand products that made environmental claims. What they found is only 1 products was true to its claim of being 100% recycled paper. The others could not back their claims, where vague and some were out right misleading and yet there they are in the stores and charging the consumer more for a “green product”. The loop holes are big and there is no sign that the government will plug them. Much like the one where a company can claim the product is made in Canada when in fact the contents can come from anywhere. As long as the packaging cost more than the content then they can make that claim and we the consumer assume that means the content is made in Canada when in fact it is not.

How concerned is the government about the environment? I say if the government was concerned then why do they allow companies to continue to over package their product as well as make so many disposable items? Why do they allow companies to move to other countries where they can get away with abuse of its works and the environment? Is this the cost of democracy? Is this what free enterprise is? We justify too much in the name of freedom and criticize those that have the common sense to know that freedom without boundaries is chaos. Free enterprise, capitalism etc is just another word for greed and nothing else.

The coming elections leave us with little hope as no matter who we elect we will be taxed more lied to more all under the false claim of environmental this and environmental that. I believe in the value of protecting the environment, but lets do just that and do away with the smoke and mirrors and the lies. We are over taxed as it is, if we need more money to protect the environment the lets cut areas that the government can cut and put it in the hands of private sector. As tax payers we don’t need the government giving money to the arts, sports and other special interest groups etc, let those with the money take care of that. If we really want to protect and change the environment then lets hold the government and companies accountable.
