Climate Change Cancelled! (Whew!)

Good News! Climate change is all a big mistake! This remarkable finding was revealed by Michael Asher in Daily Tech – a publication more focused on iPhones than atmospheric science.

Asher’s piece Sea Ice Ends Year at Same Level as 1979 confidently states that “Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago…”

Strange. That’s not what scientists are saying. Just last month NASA released a chilling report showing that between 1.5 trillion and 2 trillion tons of ice in Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska have melted at an accelerating rate since 2003 – enough to fill Chesapeake Bay 21 times.

The satellite survey of global ice loss showed that in the past five years, Greenland has lost between 150 gigatons and 160 gigatons each year. One gigaton equals one billion tons or enough to raise global sea levels about .5 mm per year

"It's not getting better; it's continuing to show strong signs of warming and amplification," said NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally. "There's no reversal taking place."

Scientists studying sea ice announced that parts of the Arctic north of Alaska were 9 to 10 degrees warmer this past fall, a strong early indication of what researchers call the Arctic amplification effect.

Positive feedback loops and accelerating climate change occur when reflective sea ice melts and allows sunlight to be instead absorbed by open water. Melting permafrost can also release massive amounts of CO2 and dangerous methane. Playing with the thermostat of the planet is deadly serious and extremely worrying to researchers.

"The pace of change is starting to outstrip our ability to keep up with it, in terms of our understanding of it," said Mark Serreze, senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., a co-author of the Arctic amplification study.

So what about the bold dismissal of climate change by Michael Asher in the electronic gadget blog? Nothing new there. He seems like just another off-the-shelf climate denier with no apparent scientific credentials.

Asher has made a monotonous habit of slagging climate science. Have a look at the titles of some of his past posts:

  • Climate Report Downgrades Ice Loss; Media Reports Opposite
  • Princeton Physicist Calls Global Warming Science "Mistaken"
  • Defying Predictions, Sea Level Rise Begins to Slow
  • Glaciers in Norway Growing Again
  • Electric Car Sales in Freefall; Industry Risks Collapse
  • How to Reduce Pollution by Drilling for Oil
  • Study Finds Health Problems from Wind Farms
  • Oxygen Depletion: The Next Great Environmental Scare

You get the idea.

There is certainly nothing new about hacks like Asher holding forth with irresponsible, baseless and boring claims of how the entire scientific community has got it wrong on climate science.

I look forward to the day when they will be treated with the same deference as people who wear tin foil hats so space aliens won’t read their brain waves.

The "no such thing as AGW" voices definetely seem to be increasing in volume and number. You can get your "no agw" fix in a lot of different flavors too - ranting, reasoning, technical, political - whatever you like - and I'd say it's not going to blow over any time soon.

Frank Bi. +1; Sun, 2009-01-11 03:06; Increasing in volume... but not in number

If the "no such thing as AGW" voices are really increasing that rapidly, the AGW inactivist movement won't need to introduce every new inactivist with so much pomp and fanfare. I mean, I just saw a big blaring headline on the International Climate 'Science' Coalition web site that read

NASA MOONWALKER/"WHOLE EARTH" PHOTOGRAPHER JOINS CLIMATE SKEPTICS

Drum rolls please!

Now, if such an occurrence is so important that it warrants a big blaring headline, then it's probably not very frequent. And indeed, it's not very frequent, because the rest of the time we get the same old dittoheads -- Tom Harris, Bob Carter, Viscount Christopher Monckton, etc. -- droning on and on with the same old talking points.

Geoff. +1; Thu, 2009-01-22 12:52; How dare they!

How dare they resort to "reasoning" and "technical" arguments to rebut global warming! What is this world coming to when these voices are allowed to be heard? Silence them all and off with their heads!

How dare they refute Time magazine's off the cuff comment that global warming was to blame for the Hudson river plane crash.

How dare they shed light on the misleading comment that part of the Greenland ice sheet "an area the size of Manhatten Island" melted (gasp!), without indicating that this represents a miniscule .03% of the entire ice sheet.

How dare they give factual information on global temperatures since 2001 that show a cooling trend that flies in the face of every model prediction relied upon by the IPCC that show continued warming over this period, not one of which predicted this cooling.

How dare they refute the implication that tropical storms will increase dramatically due to warming, even after NOAA has stated that no such trend will emerge and in fact, warming would likely decrease the incidence of tropical storms due to to a more equitable temperature balance between the equator and the poles. Shame on Al Gore for putting a hurricane on the cover of his movie and thus cementing it in the minds of the unsuspecting an image that is completely contrary to the fact that their occurance has absolutely NOTHING to do with warming. A red herring ploy at its finest.

I tire of the self-righteous approach of the global warming camp. I'm reminded of a comment by Einstein: "Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of truth and knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods." Science is never "closed." Debate should be encouraged. Ridicule should cease. If a claim is shown to be false, then it should be abandoned. Let's move forward from "us and them."

And of course ... I'm most likely a Republican with a marketing degree and ties to the oil industry. That would explain my views. Dismiss me.

Did any of you folks at Desmogblog either write Michael Asher or respond to the column  in his comments section (presuming they have one there) and ask him to explain how he could come up with his conclusions?

It's all well and good to rebut him, but only if he's made aware that he's getting rebutted.

RickJames. +1; Sat, 2009-01-10 08:01; all scientists believe

I assume all scientists believe in "global warming" It's the degree of man's involvement in the whole thing that causes confusion. If a scientist is less convinced of the weight of mankind on the climate, he is labeled a "global warming denier" even though he is fully convinced of global warming. It's a shame and a misuse of words.

Hmm...Not sure.

There are scientists who don't agree with the mainstream findings and they too don't believe that what we are going through is global warming- they call it cycles.

I know that in Australia, last summer was the hottest since 100 years and the records showed that 100 years the weather conditions that is temperature was very very similar, which is why they call it cycles.

Look I still think that CO2 is a big problem and that we need active solutions that minimise our footprint, but I don't know if it is global warming or not. hmm...

Jim Eager. +1; Sat, 2009-01-10 08:12; No,

there are a few unscroupulous people who create lists of "scientists" who do not believe in global warming.

It has been shown repeatedly that a good many of those "scientists" have no relevant expertise in fields qualifying them to judge the scientific evidence on global warming and climate change, that others are not in fact "scientists" at all, that some are in fact dead or non-existent, and even that some are qualified scientists who actually subscribe to the consensus theory of anthropogenic global warming and climate change but that their words have been deliberately taken out of context and misconstrued to make it sound like they do not.

What's left is a very short list indeed, consisting of the same few names of scientists that are already well known for their skepticism of the theory of anthropogenic global warming and climate change. Some of their points are valid but unproven or overblown, others have long since been shown to be totally and completely bogus.

Any of them who assert that the earth is actually getting colder are either completely incompetent or deliberately lying.

Jim,

Forgive me, but this is a link to the Senate Committee of (gasp!!) Sen. Inhofe. It's okay, really ... I viewed the page and did not turn into a pillar of salt. I'm supposing that you believe he personally and single-handedly coerced all the individuals in this report into making the bogus claims that they do, such is his power:

http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Files.View&FileStore_id=83947f5d-d84a-4a84-ad5d-6e2d71db52d9

The list seems to be growing, but feel free to dismiss the entire assemblage with the wave of your magical AGW hand. After all, they are most likely unscrupulous, incompetent or dang-it-all-anyway ... just plain liers.

climate criminal. +1; Tue, 2009-01-20 07:53; Belief Has Religious Connotations

You are wrong when it comes to climate scientists, they do not believe in global warming like someone believes in some superstition like a lucky white rabbit's foot.

Scientists are objective and are convinced by weighing-up the scientific evidence. Since the objective evidence regarding climate change is unequivocal (one-sided) showing that the earth is warming it takes a truly remarkable bindness to the truth to ignore the huge imbalance of evidence that demonstrates a warming world to conclude that the earth is cooling.

As for large number, either you are referring to the widely debumnked Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine's Petition Project and its associated junk science article 'environmental Effects of Carbon Dioxide' which has been widely debunked.

Alternatively you may be referring to one of the lists of scientists invented by various deniers and think-tanks that misleadingly include numerous scientists whose work in no way disputes anthropogenic climate change.

These lists are unreliable, or are downright dishonest and to quote these as if they somehow counter the conclusions of the IPCC, or Naomi Oreskes' research is dishonest in the extreme.

One of the most inspiring things that I've seen recently about the whole global warming issue was on a poster in Florida. I forget the details, but it really helped change my perspective on what we're doing to the Earth. Basically it pointed out that the Earth we currently occupy is borrowed from our children rather than inherited from our parents. The expectation being when we borrow something we should return it in the condition we received it!

When you look at it like this, it really makes you think about what impact we're having, and how our children will have to bear the consequences. How selfish of us.

As Gandhi said let's "become the change we want to see in the world".

Climate change is really a sort of mystery but an expected reality.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
