Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.
There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.
Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.

I don't find this funny, however; it does seem to echo the American position with respect to the "North-West passage".
With the complete melting of the polar ice cap during the summer, the North American consumers may get their Chinese made goods sooner. The may even save money in the process. Then there is the possibility of scooping up more oil so that we can continue to feed our addiction.
With all of these "good" things a real possibility, who could possibly be upset?
Certainly not the polar bear, they'll be long gone by then.
Will the walrus, seal, or any other arctic wildlife speak up?
No. They will also be long gone.
That's the real issue here. The complete extinction of multiple species in the Arctic ocean.
Sure during the winter the ice will return. Albeit thinner and smaller in area. But there will be no life on this smaller, weaker ice. It will also be dead.
What's more important, being in charge of the passage through Canadian waters or preventing the extinction of all life in the arctic?
Stop the warming!
