Well done!
Thanks for all the hard work you do.

It's our readers and commentors that make this such a great project - so a HUGE THANKS right back at ya!!!

I really enjoy reading your blog, it always has great insight. But I am very frustrated with the fact that so few people are talking about presidential candidates and their thoughts on global warming. Now that it is down to just a few candidates I would think that this would be a bigger issue.

Live Earth just picked up this topic and put out an article ( http://www.liveearth.org/news.php ) live earth is also asking why the presidential candidates are not being solicited for their stance on the issue of the climate change. I just saw a poll on www.EarthLab.com that says people care a lot about what their next leader thinks of global warming. Does anyone know of another poll or other results about this subject?

Here is the page where I saw the EarthLab poll: http://www.earthlab.com/life.aspx. This is a pretty legit website; they are endorsed by Al Gore and the alliance for climate protection and they have a carbon footprint calculator. Does anyone have a strong opinion about this like I do?

NOAA's NWS staff has created doubt and confusion about the science on climate change since 1993 when Al Gore became Vice President. NWS was a roadblock on climate change research and public education ever since. NWS was pooh poohing global warming and Al Gore in 2000, using their federal offices to do so. It's likely that had NWS not so that G. W. Bush would not have been elected president in 2000 and re-elected in 2004. NWS cost Gore and Kerry votes by using their public offices in ways that influenced the elections - due to NWS sour grapes denial on global warming.

I've learned a great deal here and at the other sites I've been directed to, by either DeSmog or by the other commentors. Ahem...except the trolls of course.

A grand total of 389 votes cast
-- and you even managed to beat the runner-up, that blockbuster Internet phenomenon, "Canadian Deals Blog" (even with their popular tips on the hottest supermarket flyers). Quite the achievement!

I'd say self-acknowledged criminal conspirator and Internet gambling kingpin, John Lefebvre, is certainly getting his money's worth out of the $300,000 James Hoggan & Associates Inc. is charging him for this website.

Well done!

Congratulations on the award, coming as it does on the heels of the conviction of John Lefebvre, the top financial benefactor of the DeSmog Blog, for money-laundering.

Its an impressive moral superiority you display in smearing law-abiding scientists who dissent from the manufactured and largely hollow "consensus" on global warming, that you have been funded by a felon who laundered money from criminal activities.

Give yourselves a big pat on the back that while scientists who have committed no crime and received no money from special interests get smeared by association (and often its a big reach to find that association), DeSmogBlog is funded from straightforward criminality.

It's alright - you have no shame. That's why you'll censor this comment rather than deal with reality - which is why its cross-posted to my blog as well where you can't delete it.

The link is: http://things.auditblogs.com/2008/02/10/desmogblog-funded-by-criminality/

Speaking of no shame- NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) supervisors smeared their own scientists in 2000-2005 by improperly accusing their own NWS hydrologists of insubordination and misconduct for trying to addressing climate change in modeling for Upper Midwest Spring Snowmelt Flood Outlooks.

The people who object to the politicizing of this issue need to pay attention to the filthy smear tactics of the rightwing trolls such as Rob and John A above. The enemy does not consist of honorable opponents but of sleazy, self-serving, dishonest partisans.

Are you saying Lefebvre didn't plead guilty to criminal conspiracy charges?

Are you saying he's not a multimillionaire from involvement in Internet gambling?

Are you saying Lefebvre didn't pay James Hoggan & Associates Inc. $300,000 to run this web site?

What exactly is "dishonest" about my comment, VJ? You never bothered to mention. Or do we just assume you're running your mouth as usual?

Of course we are sleazy, but not so sleazy as to run a website campaign on the proceeds of crime. That sort of sleazy we leave to you and DeSmogBlog.

It would be a no-brainer to guess how long DeSmogBlog would take to mention criminal funding if the website supported climate skepticism. About 0.0000000000001 seconds.

Talk about sleazy, dishonest partisans? I'm talking to one right now.

It would be a no-brainer to guess how long DeSmogBlog would take to mention criminal funding if the website supported climate skepticism. About 0.0000000000001 seconds.

You have failed to notice that the "skeptic"/denialists generally refuse to reveal their sources of funding, while the makers of this website honestly explained who funded this site; without your gratuitous smears, of course.

My source of funding is the sweat of my own brow. I don't take funding from criminal activities. Unlike DeSmogBlog.

I notice that you don't deny that DeSmogBlog is funded from money laundering. I guess it confirms that you have no shame.

Of course, it doesn't matter that DeSmogBlog is above its scrawny neck in sleaze - its on the side of the angels so it doesn't matter how inaccurate are its portrayals of science or scientists who dissent from a manufactured consensus. What they should have done is ask John Lefebvre for a grant to come to the right conclusion and you'd have said nothing.

I can only assume that your recurring obsession with our entirely-on-the-record source of funding means that you remain desperate to avoid the climate conversation.

For the record, I have to say, again, that John Lefebvre is a good guy, and the record shows that he has always been forthright and transparent in his dealings - accounting honestly for his income, paying his taxes and cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad. He is also a philanthropist of immense generosity and (in my view) great wisdom. I'm proud to be associated with him and grateful for his support.

Well said Richard. I've yet to meet a more generous human being and feel lucky to know him.

John A, you come mighty close to defamation. I'd watch what you say if I were you.

...while the makers of this website honestly explained who funded this site

I love this. DeSmogBlog is being "honest" for being up front that they are funded from criminality. It's refreshing to see that "honesty" has no relation whatsoever to ethics or integrity.

For anyone else who, like myself, has been unaware of the details of this "criminal behaviour", may I refer you to the following editorial which was posted at DeSmogBlog last July. You are beating a dead horse, John A. Buy a bicycle and get on with your life.

Globe editorial

Their gambling divide

From Friday's Globe and Mail

January 19, 2007 at 7:28 AM EDT

The U.S. crackdown on Internet gambling, a crusade that seems to involve arresting law-abiding citizens of other countries and threatening them with long prison terms, continues to claim new victims. The latest are Stephen Lawrence and John Lefebvre, two Canadian businessmen who founded a company called Neteller, which handles payments for online gambling sites.

While the U.S. authorities would like to paint the two as criminal masterminds, the fact is that they have broken no laws in either Canada or Britain, where their company is based. Instead, they have run afoul of the hypocritical U.S. desire to restrict gambling on the Internet while allowing it to flourish at home, where it produces billions of dollars in tourism and tax revenue.

Neteller, which processed an estimated $7-billion (U.S.) in online payments last year, has become a well-respected entity with common shares that are publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange. To the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney's Office, however, the company is "a colossal criminal enterprise masquerading as a legitimate business."

The two founders, both former Calgary lawyers who started the company in 1999, were arrested on Monday and charged with conspiring to distribute funds "with the intent to promote illegal gambling." Mr. Lefebvre was arrested in Malibu. Mr. Lawrence, who lives in the Bahamas, was arrested in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They were each released on $5-million in bail.

The men, neither of whom is currently an officer or director of the company they founded, are only the latest to be arrested. Last September, U.S. authorities detained the chairman of Sportingbet, a publicly traded online-gambling company based in Britain. In July, they arrested the CEO of a similar company, Betonsports. The founder of that company and two executives with a third online-gambling firm are considered fugitives from U.S. justice.

The impetus for the arrests was legislation (passed in October) that made online gambling a crime in the United States. Until then, authorities had to rely on a 1961 law that banned "gambling by wire" (the law under which the Betonsports CEO is being held); arrests were rare. Now, executives of online gambling-related companies avoid even changing planes in the United States for fear of being arrested.

In other words, gambling is not only permitted but encouraged when it takes place at a racetrack, lottery office or casino somewhere in the United States, but becomes a heinous crime when it takes place on the Internet. The absurdity of that position makes a mockery of the law the U.S. authorities seem so eager to enforce.

Troll.

Awesome! Congrats, DeSmoggers!

This must be a new definition for the word, "awesome".

It's awesome if a consensus of scientists in the relevant fields and with no funding from private enterprise declare in peer review quality journals that it is indeed awesome.

So there.

Well, a consensus of scientists in the relevant fields with no funding from private enterprise declared in peer-review quality journals that the planet is warming and that it is largely the result of human activities which emit greenhouse gases.

So there!

Awesome! That means that Albert Einstein, Alfred Wegener, Charles Darwin and Galileo Galilei were all wrong!

Its a shame that this "consensus" can't predict so much as the next El Nino, or explain why greenhouse gases in the past followed climate warming by eight centuries, nor allow people to replicate their results, but hey! it's better than working for a living.

You are either lying or are very ignorant of the science. If you had done any reading of quality articles and papers you would know why, in the past, CO2 has lagged temperature rise. For your information, conditions are now far different from what was happening over the past 400,000 years or so.

ENORMOUS QUANTITIES OF FOSSIL CARBON DIOXIDE HAVE BEEN POURED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE MAKING TODAY'S CLIMATE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE LAST ICE AGES.

The major climate forcings during these times were caused by changes in the Earth's orbit thus changing the amount of radiant energy reaching the surface. This is completely different from what is happening today when the major forcing is now the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide.

Ian Forrester

Oh dear.

You are either lying or are very ignorant of the science. If you had done any reading of quality articles and papers you would know why, in the past, CO2 has lagged temperature rise.

Yes, I do know why CO2 lagged temperature rise. But carbon dioxide has never ever been shown to LEAD temperature rise. And before you bore me with the concentration argument, carbon dioxide's forcing of temperature should be logarithmic, meaning that changes at lower concentrations should have proportionatley greater effect - but they don't have any measureable effect on climate. Quite the reverse.

ENORMOUS QUANTITIES OF FOSSIL CARBON DIOXIDE HAVE BEEN POURED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE MAKING TODAY'S CLIMATE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE LAST ICE AGES.

Looks like the "Caps Lock" key got pressed down in your excitement.

Several different studies of carbon dioxide in geological time reveal that modern levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are abnormally low. But then, you don't read scientific papers do you?

There is nothing at all exceptional about the modern climate. It was warmer 1000 and 2000 years ago, and much warmer 6-8000 years ago during the Holocene Optimum. The climate is not changing faster than normal, deserts are currently contracting, and incidences of tornadoes and hurricanes declined over the course of the 20th Century. Sea levels continue to rise at about 1mm/year just as they have done for 2-3 centuries.

So what is happening is not exceptional climate-wise. Carbon dioxide is the key signature for life, allowing plants to grow faster and stronger and grow better in marginal environments like semideserts.

So if you mean "exceptional" to be "much more conducive to the biosphere" then I'd agree with you.

"The major climate forcings during these times were caused by changes in the Earth's orbit thus changing the amount of radiant energy reaching the surface. This is completely different from what is happening today when the major forcing is now the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide."

That is the scenario fed into climate models. Not reality.

As I said, if climate models are so wonderful, why can't they predict anything until after it happens?

All of which is a long way from explaining why scientists who dissent from "CAPS LOCK" consensus science are smeared by this blog while it is funded from the proceeds of crime.

And we're still waiting for the explanation of the ethics and integrity gap....

John A said: "But carbon dioxide has never ever been shown to LEAD temperature rise". Till now that is. Vast sources of carbon are now being burned and the resultant carbon dioxide is being poured into the atmosphere. This has never been done before on such a massive and rapid way. In fact the opposite has been well researched and understood by scientists. This happened approximately 100 million years ago. As this carbon was being removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis and subsequent burial the carbon dioxide concentrations decreased and the temperature decreased in parallel. Thus we are undoing in a few hundred years what Nature took many millions of years to do.

For those who may never have hear of John A before, he is the gatekeeper at Climateaudit. He is responsible for the censoring of many legitimate science posts that climate scientists and others have tried to post on that site. He is partly responsible for a large part of the biased and purposely misleading and distorted science going round the denial blogsphere.

He is doing the exact opposite of what DeSmogBlog is trying to do. DeSmogBlog is trying to "clear the PR pollution that is clouding the science on climate change" while John A and his buddies are doing their best (worst) to prevent the average person becoming more aware of the real science behind AGW.

Ian Forrester

The magnitude of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels has been expressed in tonnes/year, percentages, ppm, etc etc. As you point out, we are releasing in a matter of centuries, maybe decades, what it took millions of years to sequester. But none of this registers in people's day to day experience. Most people have no conception of geological time. Is there a way to calculate & express the amount in terms that mean something to the average Joe/Jane on the street? How many trees fossilized over how many millenia = one litre of oil? How many dead dinosaurs does it take to make a gallon of gas?

When I take my wee Honda Civic to buy groceries 10km away -- a trip of 15 minutes -- how long did it take to sequester the carbon that I release?

The scale and the time frames involved are mind-boggling. We need some basic grounding and perspective. Can you help?

Fern

Fern, I've seen articles on this in the past but never archived them. I'll have a look tomorrow and see what I can find. My impression on the numbers was that it took far more biomass than I thought to make a barrel of oil.

The process can be duplicated today at far higher efficiencies but ethanol and bio-diesel are taking most of the money at present and thermo-chemical methods have been set aside. Too bad, in my opinion, since thermo-chemical methods can make use of a far greater range of substrates than the other two fuels.

Ian Forrester

I look forward to your response.

Cheers
Fern Mackenzie

That explains all the tripe he dishs out.

Hi,
I will give the information about the computer. Present every one like to buy a computers. Most of them like this computers. Day by day business opportunities are increases and at the same time present every one students to carry a laptops. So many uses in computer.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
