Did you know there's a DeSmog Smart Car?

Check out our latest episode of DeSmog TV, where we reveiw the Mercedes Smart Car. We've had one at DeSmogBlog for about a year now and it is very cool. They're coming to the US market next year.

I feel the Smart Kar will appeal to a niche market of buyers. Unfortunately, that market only consists of former-residents of East Germany who want to capture the thrill of driving a Trabant, but who never made it to the top of the Ministry of Interior Committee's List of Citizens Eligible to Purchase Exotic Consumer Goods 20-year waiting list, before the wall fell.

However, the Smart Kar is sure to capture a certain nostalgia, recalling the introduction of the first Volkswagen, which was originally named the "KdF Wagen". This translates to "Strength Through Joy Vehicle". This will be entirely an apt slogan for the Smart Kar, since you're not likely to get much strength out of the 40 horsepower hamster wheel under it's hood. Though, probably not much joy, either.

There is one other potential buyer for this sort of vehicle: professional circus clowns. The only question is, how many can pop out of a Smart Kar?

Only one.

These smart cars are hugely popular. They were launched here in Toronto a few years ago and now you are them everywhere. Your analysis is dead wrong. They will be huge in the US, especially in choked up downtown cores.
I've seen a handfull of them here in Winnipeg over the years, not overly common but apparently a good commuting car. Course, I've also seen a large increase in the number of people riding scooters in the spring/summer/fall months to make their commutes.
