Smart Science Policy Not in Canada's "Nature"

The prestigious science journal Nature condemns the Canadian government in an editorial in its latest edition. The article posts the sorry record of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who has resisted or ignored good scientific advice and has committed Canada to a fossil-fuel economy at a potentially disastrous time.

Nature is not a partisan magazine; it's a journal dedicated to science - committed to objectivity and evidence as a matter of course. Yet the editors felt moved to say this: “The present government might be dissolved after a vote of confidence next month, which could in itself lead to a change for the better.”

Harper Government Muzzling Environment Canada Scientists

A Canwest New Service story just hit the wire reporting that all Environment Canada scientists now must refer all media queries to Ottawa where communications officers will help them respond with “approved lines.”

According to documents obtained by Canwest, this new policy is in place to “ensure there are no “surprises” for Environment Minister John Baird and senior management when they open the newspaper or turn on the television.”

Obama named SmogMaker of 2007

Prize honors those who sow confusion and delay on Climate Change

Update: DeSmogBlog withdraws Obama Award

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has captured the inaugural 2007 SmogMaker Award for blowing smoke on global warming, the DeSmogBlog announced today.

Global warming is an environmental problem, not a political one. And people who try to ‘solve’ it with political or public relations spin are just making the problem worse,” said James Hoggan, co-founder of the DeSmogBlog.

Canada's Global Warming Grinch

Stephen Harper seemed positively grumpy the other day as he described the implications of his government actually doing something about global warming.
In a year-end interview with CBC, Harper said “”As soon as you're dedicated to actually reducing emissions, that imposes costs on the economy…Once we start [and] these things start biting, the criticism we're going to be getting is that we're doing too much.”
Harper seems like a man bragging to his neglected wife that if he ever made love to her, she might die from exhaustion.

Support For Harper Government "Plunges" - Global Warming Seen as Key Factor

A Harris-Decima poll released today shows that the governing Tory party in Canada, under the leadership of Prime Minister Harper is losing popularity quickly due in large part to their performance at the recent United Nation's global warming conference held in Bali, Indonesia.

The Harper government now finds itself in a statistical tie at 30% with the opposition Liberal Party.

Support for the Tories has dropped across all regions and demographic groups.

FaceBook Group: Environment is My Voting Issue in Canada

If you're on Facebook, please take a moment to add your name to our latest project called: “The Environment is My Voting Issue in Canada.”

For over a year and half, polls have identified the environment as the # 1 concern for Canadians.

Using social media tools like Facebook we can send a message to the Government of Canada that their performance on environmental issues will be judged at the ballot box.

Inaction on Global Warming Sees Canadian Tory Government Bleeding In Polls

A new Angus Reid poll out today shows that the Stephen Harper Tory government continues to slump in popularity, and much of the blame lands squarely on their continued bumbling over the issue of global warming.

The Tory government is limping along with a paltry 33 per cent of Canadians supporting their party compared with 36.3 per cent on election day and the party's high of 39 per cent in March of this year.

The environment remains the highest-ranked issue for voters.

Europe Blinks; U.S., Canada Win Lame Bali Compromise

Honoring the the will of the lowest common denominator - the worst polluters and most resistant policy makers in the world - 191 countries negotiating global greenhouse emission limits in Bali have come to a “compromise” that doesn't mention actual limits.

Prairie Sun Setting on Tory Climate Policies

The Winnipeg Sun, not generally a bastion of prairie liberalism, has penned this remarkably articulate editorial speculating that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's internationally embarrassing global warming position could be the issue that drives his party from power.

Or, he could just change his position ….

Job Security Unstable? Renewable Energy is Looking for Employees.

Author Jeff Goodell's quote, “[a] full-blown push for clean energy could unleash a jobs bonanza that would make what happened in Silicon Valley in the 1990s look like a bake sale,” rings true when you look at yesterday's job report published by the UN.

The report found that solving global warming has resulted in world wide employment gains.
