Merkel Greeted On U.S. Trip by Dancing Green Hard Hats Demanding Strong Climate Action

While most climate activists are focused solely on the Waxman-Markey legislation that is due to be voted on by the US Congress any time now, a group of youth climate activists are taking the time to make sure that President Obama and Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel know that the youth movement demands strong action at the upcoming G8 summit and December’s Copenhagen climate summit as well.

Proud Bush celebrates U.S. as "world's biggest polluter"

In a final demonstration that the entire Bush presidency has been a fraternity prank that got out of hand, the U.S. President left the G8 meeting today shouting the words, "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter," and pumping his fist.

Short of announcing publicly how much his "blind trust" has earned from oil-related activity during the last eight years, it would be hard to imagine a clearer statement on why George W. has done less than nothing about climate change. He actually thinks this is funny.

World Economic Forum Makes Climate Change Case to G8 Leaders

In a Report to G8 host and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, the corporate heavyweights of the World Economic Forum and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) have set out an aggressive set of recommendations for addressing climate change.

The report, endorsed by CEOs from Alcoa, Royal Dutch Shell and 97 other mutli-nationals, begins with a broad statement of clarity:

While some uncertainties remain – applying a risk management perspective to the available information – we conclude that a reasonable approach is for all leaders of business and government to take action now.

UK's Blair nudges Bush Administration to back carbon deal next month

The prime minister, speaking on BBC TV, said climate-change awareness is gaining momentum with Americans and it’s possible the U.S. may be willing to support an agreement at the G8 summit in June on cutting carbon dioxide emissions.

Where global leadership means stalling and heel-dragging

A spokeswoman for the White House Council on Environment Quality told BBC today that, "the US continues to lead the global effort on climate change."

Apparently "lead the global effort" somehow means culling language from a draft G8 summit document that would see member nations getting tough on greenhouse gas emissions. The BBC has obtained a document outlining plans for the US to, yet again, water down tough global action on climate change.

G-8 To Cut Carbon Emissions? Don't Bank On It!

Germany has pushed the G-8 to set a tough target for reducing carbon emissions.

But environmentalists said the World Bank, which the G8 has asked to finance the shift away from carbon use in the developing world, was continuing to ramp up lending for oil and gas.

G8 to gauge cost of species loss from climate change

Environment Ministers from the G8 have agreed to study the world economic impact of species being driven to extinction by global warming. The ministers have agreed to conduct the review along the lines of last year’s report by economist Sir Nicholas Stern.
