Marc Morano Manufacturing the Hype.... again

Marc Morano, spindoctor to the climate denial stars and former aid to Republican Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) is breathlessly proclaiming in a large bold headline today that:

"Left-wing Env. Scientist Bails Out Of Global Warming Movement"

Took about 3 minutes on Google searching the name Denis Rancourt, who Morano is referring to in his post, to find that this is nothing even remotely new for Rancourt.

Rancourt  has been writing rants against the science of climate change for years.

Morano is trying to spindoctor this into a newsworthy story by making it seem like Rancourt is someone who was completely accepting of the scientific reality of climate change and then just woke up one morning last week and decided to jump ship.

What makes this all the more ridiculous is that Morano himself pushed the exact same story about Rancourt in 2009 when he worked for Senator James Inhofe.

Hopefully the mainstream media are smarter than that and take this story for what it is - pure hype.

Marc Morano: "He's the turd in the punch bowl ..."

" ... that's all he is and all he can be."

The amazing thing about Esquire's brilliantly written new profile on Marc Morano is that Morano himself probably loves it.

Per the quote above, Esquire writer John Richardson calls Morano a "turd in the punch bowl." He calls him a liar, referring to "the method Morano loves best, using the laugh value of satire to displace the truth requirements of journalism."

Yet Esquire still gives Morano 6,500 words of love and attention (the two are one and the same in Morano's denier circles). The magazine even introduces him in the subhed as the guy who "broke the Swift Boat story and effectively stalled John Kerry's presidential run." (C'mon, you guys. He didn't "break" it. He made it up.)

Marc Morano embarrasses himself on BBC

Marc Morano (backgrounder on Mr. Swift Boat here) has been watching way too much Fox News.

Watch him completely embarrass himself in an interview on the BBC:

For Balance: Let's Have Marc Morano's emails

The Deniersphere being alive with delight over the emails stolen from the UK Hadley Centre, my colleague Kevin Grandia has wondered aloud (see next post) about what a similar sampling of emails might look like if they were sourced from one of the most aggressive and least (climate) credible think tanks - the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

Why stop there?

As a stunning amount of email traffic on this issue currently seems to be coming from uberDenier Marc Morano, why doesn't the former aide to Okalahoma Senator and Republican Denier-in-Chief James Inhofe volunteer to share his correspondence?

Kevin suggested a six-month supply from CEI. I reckon the last six days from Morano might significantly advance the question of who's credible on this issue. It might even show who hacked Hadley.

C'mon Markey. Show us what you got.

If yours is a reasonable assault on the scientists named in the CRU hacked emails, you should have no reservations about submitting to as quick second reading. Marc? Marc!!? Get your finger off that delete key!

Climate contrarians spinning hard with stolen email files

I'll admit, as someone who spends most days looking for leaked documents, the package of stolen emails and documents from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University is pretty juicy. Anything that provides insight into the inner-workings of your opponents is pretty much manna from heaven in this line of work.

I have been going through all the files today and I hate to disappoint but it just ain't the scandal climate conspiracy theorists want it to be.

These emails are blissfully being spun by the climate contrarians as proof of some type of worldwide conspiracy by scientists to fake the climate change crisis. Michelle Malkin, who relishes Ann Coulter-esque statements, goes so far as to call it "the global warming scandal of the century.”

Right.

As Brad Johnson writes, it's more likely proof that climate deniers are the crazed conspiracy theorists we always thought they were.

At the center of the conspiracy claim is a quote in a casual conversation between colleagues talking about Mike's Nature "trick."

They are referring to the Michael Mann hockey stick study from ten years ago that has been the subject of attacks by climate skeptic bloggers for many years now. In fact, it got so bad that the US National Academy of Sciences was called in by the US Senate to look further into the validity of the Mann study.

Marc Morano: Global Warming Spin Doctor flogged as "Perfect Counter Guest Debater"

Marc Morano, former Republican spindoctor turned think tanker, is now touting himself as the "counter guest debater to Al Gore and Global Warming Climate change disinformation."

Morano and his new employer the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) are flooding the inboxes of journalists and reporters today selling Marc Morano as a "global warming expert." Claiming Morano as an "expert" in climate change is completely laughable and I think mainstream media will agree.

The only thing Marc Morano is "expert" in is spinning stories for this former Republican boss Senator James Inhofe (R-OK).

Here's a copy of the email sent around today to news media outlets:

Here's your counter guest debater to Al Gore and Global Warming Climate change disinformation plus

Here's your counter guest debater to Al Gore and Global Warming Climate change disinformation plus how Obama's Policies are affecting our economy.

For your on-air expert contributor talent files: Credentialed “Counter Guest” to popular global warming ideology: Here’s your anti-Gore Global Warming Expert who offers the science to counteract partisan and ideologically driven Environmental entities and issues.

If you believe most, or all, of the global warming dogma, you may use Marc as your “counter guest” to offer a lively, fair and balanced discussion to your audience.  If you are a skeptic of the current doctrine, Marc can aid your program by clearing up the deception with the facts.

Marc Morano infuses the environmental debate with a balanced and truthful scientific perspective.  Marc’s agenda is to revolutionize Climate and Environmental news dissemination to portray the accurate truth.

Marc says: “Much of what the media reports is simply a regurgitation of the rhetoric from partisan and ideologically driven environmental groups, foundations and the United Nations, which are spinning data to promote a cause.  Sadly, many of today’s mainstream climate reporters would be better suited writing newsletters for Al Gore than attempting to inform the public about the latest climate science developments”

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
