"Our Energy Moment": The Blue Engine Behind Fracked Gas Exports PR Blitz

Behind nearly every major corporate policy push there's an accompanying well-coordinated public relations and propaganda campaign. As it turns out, the oil and gas industry's push to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) obtained via hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) plays the same game.

And so on February 5, “Our Energy Moment” was born. The PR blitz is described in a press release announcing the launch as a “new coalition dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating the many benefits of expanded markets for liquefied natural gas.”

Its member list includes industry heavy hitters such as Cheniere Energy, Sempra Energy, Louisiana Oil and Gas Association and Freeport LNG.

Since its launch, “Our Energy Moment” has disseminated press releases about the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) conditional approval of Jordan Cove LNG export facility in Coos Bay, Oregon and its conditional approval of Cameron LNG export facility in Hackberry, Louisiana.  

So the industry is funding a PR campaign clearly in its self interest. But so what? You have to read all the way to the bottom of the press releases to find what's perhaps the most interesting tidbit. 

At the very bottom of “Our Energy Moment's” releases, a contact person named Tiffany Edwards is listed with an email address ending in @blueenginemedia.com. If you visit blueenginemedia.com you'll find the website for PR and advertising firm Blue Engine Message & Media

Further, a domain name search for ourenergymoment.org reveals the website was registered by another PR and web development firm called Liberty Concepts by its founder and president Jonathan Karush. Karush registered the site on May 8, 2013, a full ten months before the campaign's official launch date. 

Who are these firms and why do they matter? That's where the fun begins.

"Green" funding for Ford: Why Government Shouldn't Pick Winners

The Canadian government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper is reported to be on the verge of giving $200 million from a “green initiatives fund” to Ford and General Motors - to help those failing companies continue to build really big (and increasingly unpopular) cars and trucks.

Ford, which lost $8.7 billion in the second-quarter of this year as its truck-dominated fleet crashed into oily reality, is advertising its latest Ontario production facility as “green” because it features a “more fuel-efficient V8 engine.” And Stephen Harper, in a pre-election vote-buying frenzy, is using taxpayers money to prop up this stupidity.

Solutions: Electric Car to Make Euro Debut in 2009

The Norwegian makers of the Think electric car have announced their intention to go into production next year with a $25,000, 95% recyclable, fully electric car. (Nice!)

It's interesting to note that the faltering Ford Motor Company, North America's leading maker of “light” trucks, sold Think to private investors in 2004. (Clever!?)

California vs. Automakers dropped - bickering continues, greenhouse gas emissions rise

A federal judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed by the State of California against auto manufacturers. The suit claimed damages against automakers for the environmental damage being caused by excessive greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. 

Or in other words, the automakers named in the lawsuit (General Motors, Toyota, Ford Motor, Honda Motor, Daimler Chrysler and Nissan) can continue to pump greenhouse gas into our atmosphere and taxpayers will continue to foot the bill to study, plan, monitor and respond to the impacts of global warming.

Easy to be Green if you stopped suing Green States

A ruling in Vermont today will force automakers to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent over the next 10 years.

Automakers, including Ford “it's easy to be green” Motors, the “Environmentologists” at  Honda and “look at our great hybrid” Toyota have been fighting mandatory state-level carbon emission standards for close to ten years, saying the effect on industry would be devastating.

Return of the Electric Car?

The Ford Motor Company, who has been criticized in the past by environmentalists for backing down from their alternative energy, vehicle development, announced that they would be selling plug-in hybrids in the next five to ten years.

This is the first time that Ford has announced a timeline for producing plug-in hybrids. The plug-in hybrid is seen as the best type of alternative energy vehicle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and gas consumption.

The Toyota Technique: Talking Out of Both Sides of Your Mouth

Toyota, the world's new number one automaker has been winning praise far and wide for the fuel efficiency of its fleet. And Toyota Vice President Josephine Cooper said in a recent TV interview that “Toyota has long supported increasing fuel economy standards for vehicles, which means increasing CAFE [Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency] standards.”

This would be noble if it were true.
