Clean Coal is a Joke

A little Christmas humor from online personality Rob Cottingham at Social Signal who knows all too well that clean coal is a joke. 2008-12-23-cleancoalchristmascartoon.gif

Nightmare On Coal Street: The Video

Earlier this week, President-elect Barack Obama announced his picks for his energy team, with Dr. Steven Chu to head up the Department of Energy.

Dr. Chu is not the happy holiday gift the “clean coal” folks were hoping for.

The blogosphere has been abuzz with something Chu said about coal in an alternative energy talk he gave at UC Berkeley in April 2007. The video of the talk is nearly two hours long, but we snagged the important bit, where he talks about coal.

ACCCE Coal Carolers scrubbed, scrapped and gone forever (I hope)

The other day I wrote a post titled, “Give the gift of Asthma and a Warmer Planet this Christmas” on what might have to be the most blatant pro-coal marketing bafflegab in the history of the United States.

The campaign was run by the coal-industry front group the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricty (ACCCE) and it featured little lumps of coal that sang distateful pro-coal renditions of classic Christmas carols, like this:

As I wrote at the time, “… this latest publicity stunt is absolutely absurd and shows just how far the coal lobby is willing to go to market their dirty product as somehow being clean.

The reality of the US coal power industry

Did you know that a typical coal power plant in the United States will emit 3.7 million tons of carbon dioxide, 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxide this year?

I came across a great “top ten” list assembled by the Union of Concerned Scientists that paints a very clear picture of the major pollutants still being emitted by the US coal power generation industry.

I’ve made it into a static reference page on DeSmogBlog, you can click here to go the page: Facts on the Pollution caused by the US Coal Industry.

You can also download a PDF version of the fact sheet here: Facts on the Pollution caused by the US Coal Industry (PDF Version)

Give the gift of Asthma and a Warmer Planet this Christmas

I don’t even know what you call the latest marketing ploy by the coal industry lobby group the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE). But if there’s one thing that is for certain it’s that ACCCE has way too much time and money on their hands.

I encourage you to check out ACCCE’s Clean Coal Carolers - I really don’t mind sending a bunch of traffic their way because this latest publicity stunt is absolutely absurd and shows just how far the coal lobby is willing to go to market their dirty product as somehow being clean. In fact, I think you should send this to everyone you know, show them how ridiculous this clean coal marketing has actually become.

ACCCE’s dancing coal carolers actually remind me of another marketing campaign from a few years back, maybe it’s where they found their inspiration:

The Reality of Clean Coal [video]

A new campaign has been launched taking straight aim at the multi-million dollar effort by the coal industry and their front groups to convince us all that somehow the dirtiest energy source in the world is somehow clean.

The reality is that coal is dirty and the industry knows it. Why else would the coal companies funnel tens of millions to a group called Americans Coalition Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE)?

As this new campaign points out, there’s simply no such thing as clean coal technology:

Clean Coal: This Is Reality

In reality, there is no such thing as clean coal. The Join Reality is going to challenge the clean coal myth and make sure misleading articles, false statements and other hype don’t go unanswered.

Al Gore: Environmental Solutions Equal Economic Solutions

When economy and environment are pitted against each other (a la Stephen Harper) we are manipulated into thinking that we must sacrifice one in order to achieve success with the other. In fact, our economies depend on the environment – without the resources that this earth provides we wouldn’t have an economy to operate and when those resources start to run out, cause serious security issues and create major environmental damage, then we are in grave danger of losing more than just our pay cheques.

Coal Booster McCain all spin no substance on job promises

One day to go and McCain (R-AZ) is re-branding himself the “coal booster” in a last ditch effort to pick up some support in coal States like Pennsylvania.

In a speech yesterday at the University of Scranton, PA, McCain stated that:

My friends, I’ve been a coal booster and it’s going to create jobs, and we’re going to export coal to other countries and we are going to create hundreds of thousands of jobs. That’s going to help restore the economy of the great state of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
