Tracking "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices" and "Clean Coal" across the United States

Call it "Geo-blogging," if you'd like.

Here's an interactive Google Map we've started to keep track of the PR, advertising and lobbying efforts being undertaken by "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices," (ABEC) as they spend a reported $40 million on behalf of the coal industry to sell the virtues of "clean coal" in the run-up to the 2008 Presidential election.

If you would like to contribute to the map or have information on ABEC activities in your region, please drop us an email at: desmogblog [at] gmail.com and we'll add your entry.

Flaks Flog "Clean Coal" in Ohio

The $40 million "clean coal" campaign being run by the so-called "Americans For Balanced Energy Choices" (ABEC) has hit Columbus,Ohio with larger than life billboards as the latest tactic.

Of course, nowhere on the sign (not even in the fine print) will you find, "Paid for by the US Coal Industry," or "This ad campaign is brought to you in part by the largest coal company in America, Peabody Energy."

ABEC could at least be somewhat honest and advertise themselves as "Coal Companies for Balanced Energy Choices."

Is Burying Carbon in the Ground the Answer to the Woes of Coal?

They call it "clean coal. " They tell us that the pollution problem is "fixed" and the solution to the greenhouse gas implication is just around the corner.

They say, "Don't worry that burning coal releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than any other fuel source . We'll soon 'sequester' that stuff: we'll bury it in the ground."

How soon?

Burying the carbon produced from the burning of coal, so called Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), isn't as simple as the coal advocates would have us think. At the rate CCS technology is being developed, Richard Branson will have figured out how to send tourists to Moon before we see anyone storing significant amounts of carbon under our feet.

Americans For Balanced Energy Choices Pennsylvania "Clean Coal" Campaign Revealed

The other day we revealed the coal industry's PR plans for the State of Nevada.

We've now obtained a similar PR strategy document for Pennsylvania State.

Selling the virtues of "clean coal" on behalf of the coal industry has been undertaken by an organization calling itself the "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices" (ABEC).

ABEC has reportedly received $35 million from the some of the largest coal companies in the world, including Peabody Energy, CONSOL Energy and Arch Coal to convince America that coal is the answer to our energy and environmental concerns.

Celebrate Our Coal, Come On!

This is probably not the celebration Kool and the Gang had in mind when they wrote their hit song "Celebration."

But its America's overabundance and over-reliance on the dirtiest form of electrical generation that has one industry front group celebrating.

Check out this website run by an organization called the "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC), and in particular their "50% TV Spot" video.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
