Drip, Drip, Drip: Heartland's Credibility Leaks Steadily Away

Matthew Reichbach of the New Mexico Centre for Independent Media contributes another name and another quote from scientists objecting to being added to the Heartland Institute's overcooked list of scientists who deny climate change.

"From what I can tell, the list was compiled mostly from reviewed scientific articles in which authors proposed or identified various sources of natural variability in climate; in my case solar irradiance and cosmic ray flux. I’m not sure of the intent of the compilation of 500 names, but the supplied information seems to suggest 500 authors have questioned human induced variability. This does not hold in my case and probably does not in the case of many others."

Roger Y. Anderson, University of New Mexico

Heartland Still Misrepresenting 500 Scientists as "Co-authors" of Denial Paper

The Heartland Institute is still misrepresenting 500 scientists as "co-authors" of a paper that challenges the human role in global warming.

Although Heartland President and CEO Joseph Bast conceded on Monday that his organization had been wrong to present the scientists as people who personally and professionally doubted the proof of humankind's impact on the climate, he refused to respond to the demands from dozens of those scientists to have their names removed entirely from the web-published "paper."

Heartland Insitute Backs off Fraudulent List - Refuses to Apologize

The Heartland Institute has withdrawn its claim of having identified "500 Scientists with Documented Doubts about Global Warming Scares," but is refusing the demands by dozens of those scientists to be removed from the Heartland's original offending document.

Heartland President Joseph Bast rationalizes that aside from the misleading headline, "none of the articles and news releases produced by The Heartland Institute or the Hudson Institute (the original source of the lists) claims that all of the scientists who appear in the lists currently doubt that the modern warming is man-made."

Heartland Institute Tricked Video Subject in "Unstoppable Solar Cycles"

At least two subjects in a Heartland Institute DVD that challenges the science of global warming say they were tricked into participating.

Rie Oldenburg, curator of the Narsaq Museum in Southern Greenland, and Ingibjorg Gisladottir, a guide to the Brattahlid Ruins (the original site of Eric the Red, Greenland settlement) say they were told they were contributing to a video on Norse history. Both were horrified to learn that their interviews were used to contribute to a DVD that denies the human contribution to climate change.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
