ACCCE’s Wild and Crazy Advertising Claims Debunked

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is running ads on the websites of the Washington Post and The Hill citing a potentially fraudulent survey which claims that “72% of opinion leaders support coal electricity.”

Busting the Abundant Coal Reserves Myth

The coal industry’s spin doctors have been droning on about the abudance of coal for the last year, but new research by Dave Rutledge, Chair of Caltech’s engineering and Applied Sciences Division, calculates that the world’s coal reserves may be much less “abundant” than the coal industry would like us to think:

“The record of geological estimates made by governments for their fossil fuel estimates is really horrible,” Rutledge said during a press conference at the American Geological Union annual meeting. “And the estimates tend to be quite high. They over-predict future coal production.”

The coal lobby states that, “within our [US] borders, we have enough coal to last the next 200 years.” But by Rutledge’s calculations 90% of the entire world’s estimated coal reserves will have been produced by 2069.

ACCCE Coal Carolers scrubbed, scrapped and gone forever (I hope)

The other day I wrote a post titled, “Give the gift of Asthma and a Warmer Planet this Christmas” on what might have to be the most blatant pro-coal marketing bafflegab in the history of the United States.

The campaign was run by the coal-industry front group the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricty (ACCCE) and it featured little lumps of coal that sang distateful pro-coal renditions of classic Christmas carols, like this:

As I wrote at the time, “… this latest publicity stunt is absolutely absurd and shows just how far the coal lobby is willing to go to market their dirty product as somehow being clean.

Introducing the Clean Coal Smackdown

Here on DeSmog we've been writing a lot about so-called “clean coal,” a word that would fit well under Stephen Colbert's definition of truthiness:

what you want the facts to be, as opposed to what the facts are. What feels like the right answer as opposed to what reality will support.”

Coal is far from clean, but a $40 million advertising and public relations campaign by a coal industry front group calling itself the “American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity” is doing its darndest to try and convince us otherwise.

So we would like to proudly introduce the Clean Coal Smackdown!
