Why Won't Monckton Join the Scientific "Debate"?

Lord Christopher Monckton, Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley is again sharing his pearls of wisdom on climate change. His latest offering is an “original paper” produced for the non-peer reviewed, and mysteriously funded front group called the “Science and Public Policy Institute”.

A real scientist named Dr. Andrew Glikson at the Australian National University took the time to rebut Monckton’s arguments, which is available here.

I would point out that “Lord” Monckton is not and never has been a member of the British House of Lords, having received zero votes in his latest bid to be included in that body. Nor is he a scientist, instead receiving an undergraduate degree in classics and a diploma in journalism studies.

However, he does have quite a bit to say on the subject of climate science, referring variously to researchers in the field as “liars”, “frauds” and “bed-wetters”.

It is strange that someone that spends so much time hectoring scientists never seems to attend scientific conferences, or have his material published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

It is like someone bragging that they are a better golfer than Tiger Woods without ever entering a tournament.

Monckton's cure for climate change: Put the scientists in jail

Christopher Monckton, leading voice for the denier delegation sponsored by the oil-backed Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, has been recorded telling youth delegate Brennan Garrett that the cure for the Kyoto protocol is to lock up all the world's best climate scientists for "fraud" and "racketerring."

Monckton, who won a certain amount of infamy in the 1980s by saying that the UK government should lock up and quarantine all people with HIV/AIDS, turns his attention in this video to how the same "cure" could be applied to scientists who are trying to get the world's attention on climate change. When Garrett implies that it is actually the deniers who are "new," who's efforts could be fatal for a huge portion of earth's population and who's condition (denial) appears incurable, Monckton chooses to miss the point.

Loopy Larouchians on the "Copenhagen scandal"

Another day; another wacky denier website

The Schiller Institute, a project of the failed politician (and spouse of Lyndon Larouche) Helga Zepp-Larouche, has launched a new website dedicated to denying climate change and attacking the Copenhagen climate conference.

Copenhagenscandal.org reads like a hastily (but expensively) assembled collection of denier tracts, including recent speeches from Christopher Monckton, the Third Viscount Monckton of Benchmark Crude, and the denier for hire, Dr. S. Fred Singer.

According to the website, and to a ponderous news advisory issued in Copenhagen, the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has nothing to do with protecting the environment. It's all a crafty plan to establish a world dictatorship.

Copenhagen Climate Talks: Monckton "Hitler Youth" Video

It looks like Christopher Monckton, the head of the right-wing CFACT delegation at the Copenhagen climate talks, is unfamiliar with Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies.

After calling a group of young people from Sustain US,  "hitler youth" and "Nazis" at the Copenhagen climate summit yesterday, Christopher Monckton confronts the same youth today and says:

"I will not shake the hand of Hitler youth."

Making it even more unacceptable (if that's even possible), the person who's hand he refuses to shake, Ben Wessel, is Jewish.

This is the same Christopher Monckton who once wrote in an article entitled, The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS,  that anyone with the disease should be quarantined for life.

This is appalling bigotry and Monckton is completely and utterly out of line for labeling young people who represent our future such things.

I will have a complete transcript shortly.

CopenDenier Monckton pretends he's a scientist. "Hitler Youth" call him on it.

Christopher Monckton is making quite a show of himself at the Copenhagen climate talks.

Last night we reported that Monckton publicly called a group from Sustain US a bunch of "Nazis" and "Hitler Youth."

Now in a video today he's shown droning on in great detail about the science of climate change (although he has absolutely no background in the area of climate change research) with the same young people he called Nazis the night before.

Monckton's intolerance and gall is outrageous. But what still remains more outrageous is that some mainstream media continue to use him as a credible source at the climate talks.

I tell you, whoever has the time to follow Monckton around Copenhagen with a video camera is going to get a lot of great clips. And I'll gladly promote them.

Here's the video:

Best Dissection Yet of CopenDeniers Conference

Guardian environment editor John Vidal gives the DenierChaps convening in Copenhagen the kind of attention they deserve in his piece today.

He had the temerity to stand up in the room and ask:

"I would like to know whether you or anyone in this room has been to the Himalayas, or to the Sunderbans, or to the villages that are now drowning near Chittagong in Bangladesh, where temperatures are being recorded 4C above normal, where respected scientists are finding significant sea level rises, where cyclones are more frequent and intense? Have any of you tried to find out for yourself what is going on there?"

Through the whistling and abuse that followed, you could only conclude that the answer was no.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
