Bjorn Lomborg is at it Again

It must be sad for professional contrarians like Bjorn Lomborg when their well worn speaking points become more laughably wrong with each emerging study on the dangers of climate change.

That of course does not stop Lomborg from holding forth his increasingly loopy opinions at every opportunity - most recently in the Australian, where Lomborg hectors incoming President Obama for his shoddy understanding of climate science. (By the way, Lomborg’s training is in political science)

Lets get stared on pulling apart this polemic and the laundry list of errors and misinformation.

Lomborg starts by calling into question the link between tropical cyclones and climate change. The doubting Dane intones:

It is simply wrong to say that storms are growing stronger every hurricane season… hurricanes across the world for the past year have been about as inactive as at any time since records began to be kept.”

Strange. That’s not what scientific community thinks.

Damning the Danes: Canada Not the Only Backslider in Poznan

Canada climate-change record is so frequently criticized at the UN climate conference in Poznan, Poland, that its tempting to think everyone else is doing the right thing in enacting good climate policy. But one “good example” frequently cited - Denmark - has, since 2001, taken a villainous turn on the climate file.

Denmark is famous for its windmills, and especially for its mid-80s policy promoting the use of alternative energy sources for the generation of electricity. Thanks to that policy, Denmark now generates nearly 20 per cent of its electricity from wind and the Danish wind industry, which employs 20,000 people, dominates the international market.

Bjorn Lomborg’s Message Meets Reality

Bjorn Lomborg had an embarrassing encounter with truth this month. The Skeptical Environmentalist has made a lucrative career of jetting around the world on media tours telling the public that dealing with climate change will endanger the world’s poorest people.

The United Nations doesn’t see it that way. Last week the World Health Organization issued a statement for World Health Day recognizing that climate change will devastate populations in developing countries.

Bjorn Lomborg and the Anti-Climate Crowd

Bjorn Lomborg is breaking bread with another right wing think tank this week. The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research will be hosting the “skeptical environmentalist” for a speech today in the Big Apple.

Lomborg continues to tour the world delivering his message of “don’t worry – be happy” around environmental issues - particularly global warming. In May he will be hosting the Copenhagen Consensus 2008 conference where we can expect to see another contrived conclusion that climate change is too expensive to deal with.

Welcome to Copenhagen Consensus 2008

Well-known climate change apologist Bjorn Lomborg is at it again. In May 2008, the “skeptical environmentalist” will be hosting the latest Copenhagen Consensus 2008 conference in Denmark.

For the uninitiated, this event is where a group of right wing economists, hand picked by Bjorn Lomborg, paid for by the conference organized by Bjorn Lomborg, will rank a laundry list of the Earth’s ills based on an arbitrary budget and timeline.

Global Warming and the Posture of Skepticism

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. There was my latest issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine – the “Magazine for Science and Reason” –and on the cover were the words:

“Let's Cool It on Global Warming–Bjorn Lomborg.”

I was stunned.

I started my professional career working for Skeptical Inquirer. My last book was excerpted there, and I'm currently a contributing editor.

Echo Chamber: Morano's Distortions Have Staying Power

Dismissing the risks of global warming as “baseless and undisguised propaganda,” a John Birch Society blogger has pronounced that evidence for climate change is “shoddy,” and that, on the basis of Bjorn Lomborg's (thoroughly discredited) analysis, “a little warming wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.”

This is classic “Echo Chamber” PR: you start with a lie; you pass the lie around; and after you repeat it enough times, it starts to sound like the truth.

Obama named SmogMaker of 2007

Prize honors those who sow confusion and delay on Climate Change

Update: DeSmogBlog withdraws Obama Award

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has captured the inaugural 2007 SmogMaker Award for blowing smoke on global warming, the DeSmogBlog announced today.

Global warming is an environmental problem, not a political one. And people who try to ‘solve’ it with political or public relations spin are just making the problem worse,” said James Hoggan, co-founder of the DeSmogBlog.

Bjorn Lomborg: Saving the world from phony analogies

The Industrialists' Environmentalist, Bjorn Lomborg, stepped out today with a (password protected) Globe and Mail article likening the effects of climate change to the death toll from traffic accidents: it's something we could easily fix, Lomborg says, but we don't want to because driving around is too convenient.

This is another painful example of Lomborg's skill at turning the telescope around before studying what may be the greatest threat to global habitation in human history. In Lomborg's manipulated view, something very big is suddenly - reassuringly - teeny, tiny and easily ignored.
