Climate Denier Lord Lawson 'Has No Influence' Says Head of UK Committee on Climate Change

Lord Lawson has no influence, fails to listen, and is touchy and rude – according to the Conservative peer leading Britain’s independent Committee on Climate Change.

But Lord Deben does not believe George Osborne, the chancellor, has fallen under the influence of Lord Lawson on the issue of climate change. He also descried the failure of environmentalists to present a convincing case to government.

The thing we have to accept about this government is that there is not a place for woolly good-heartedness,” he said.

Coal Baron Matt Ridley is Top Source in Peabody Climate Report to the White House

British climate denier and coal baron Matt Ridley is the most cited individual in coal giant Peabody Energy’s official submission to the White House addressing the company’s concerns regarding new policies proposed by the US Government around greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

The 71-page document on the government’s National Environmental Policy Act, uncovered by DeSmogBlog, declares that greenhouse gases are a “non-existent harm”. Ridley’s opinion articles, such as one professing “fossil fuels will save the world” published in the Wall Street Journal, form much of the basis for the coal company’s arguments submitted in March.

Ridley writes frequently in the Wall Street Journal and the Times promoting fossil fuels, while at the same time earning considerable wealth from coal mining. The peer’s Blagdon Estate, north of Newcastle, covers a significant part of two opencast mines.

Labour and Tory MPs Join Lord Lawson's Climate Denial Global Warming Policy Foundation

Two climate change sceptic MPs have just joined Lord Lawson’s climate denial charity, the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), in its efforts to oppose policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

It was announced today that Graham Stringer, Labour MP for Blackley and Broughton, and Peter Lilley, Conservative MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, will join the GWPF’s Board of Trustees. They are the only currently-elected MPs to be listed as members.

Both Lilley and Stringer are well-known for their climate scepticism. Last July, they were the only two MPs to vote against the Energy and Climate Change Committee’s acceptance of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) conclusion that humans are the dominant cause of global warming.

Remember When Lord Lawson Brought Climate Denial to the House of Lords?

Lord Lawson would command the admiration and gratitude of the sceptic cause when he raised the economics of climate change in the House of Lords. DeSmog UK’s epic history series continues.

Lord Nigel Lawson delivered the coup de grâce in June 2005 when he persuaded his fellow peers on the economic affairs committee of the House of Lords to examine the economics of climate change.

As a committee member, Lawson persuaded the House of Lords to launch a powerful and high profile Parliamentary inquiry examining allegations that the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had based its analysis on poor statistics and economics.

Lord Lawson’s French Neighbours Struggle with Climate Change, Yet He Continues to Deny It

This DeSmog UK epic history post details the 2003 heatwave in Europe and the pivotal moment it played for climate denier Lord Lawson.

Lord Nigel Lawson and his second wife, Thérese, made £1 million from selling their idyllic six-bedroom mansion and its surrounding ten acres of land in Northamptonshire during the housing boom.

The retired couple then bought and renovated, at great cost, a serenely picturesque neo-classical Armagnac house just outside Vic-Fezensac in the heart of the grape-growing region of Gascony in the south of France.

Exposed: Two Funders of Lord Lawson's Climate Denial Charity Linked to Energy Industry

Lord Lawson’s climate denial charity has accepted secret donations from a consultant who worked for the nuclear industry and a wealthy Tory peer who claims to have been the first person in Britain to have built subsidised wind farms.

An investigation by DeSmog UK has identified two funders of the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) who have both during their careers had vested interests in the energy industry.

Lord Lawson, chairman-for-life of the GWPF, has steadfastly refused to name his funders despite appeals from senior MPs for greater transparency. Despite this, DeSmog UK has managed to name several of his donors.

March Madness: Don’t Miss DeSmog UK’s Top Moments

We hit an exciting milestone in March with both our Facebook and Twitter pages reaching more than 1,000 followers. So, a big thank you is owed to everyone for liking and engaging with DeSmog UK!

Our top story caused quite the stir, to say the least. In a two-part exclusive interview with Michael Mann – dubbed his most intimate interview ever – we covered everything from American football and colour printers to Mann’s love of solving “important problems”.

With almost 4,000 pageviews between the two posts, and more than 200 shares on social media, we saw a global and varied readership. Michael Mann thought it was pretty great too, sharing it out on all his social media channels (cheers for that!).

Lawson’s Desperate Bid To Distance Charity From In-Law Monckton’s Homophobic Rant

Lord Lawson’s climate denial charity, the Global Warming Policy Foundation, has this week attempted to distance itself from fundraiser Lord Monckton’s extraordinary homophobic rant.

Lord Monckton published an uncharitable and spiteful attack on the “homosexual death style” under the headline “Left Fears Facts: From ‘Gay’ Marriage to Climate Change”.

The former Tory party advisor and UKIP member said: “Does homosexuality cause harm? As the author of Romans rightly points out, it does. It makes homosexuals ill. And then it kills them. Unpleasantly, permanently and irremediably…”

This is How the Energy Industry Reacted to the Kyoto Protocol

This DeSmog UK epic history post describes how an economic think tank became a beacon of light around which the industries most affected by the new Kyoto Protocol met to discuss strategies to deal with the international agreement.

The first time is tragedy – the second time is farce. Lord Lawson, the former chancellor, is today the chairman of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

The member of the House of Lords claims that his registered charity, which attacks policy designed to prevent climate change, has no financial links to the oil industry.

Twenty years ago, Lord Lawson was chairman of another charity. This one was specifically established to represent the oil industry, building bridges with senior politicians and civil servants.

Bank of England Says Climate Change Research 'Absolutely Essential' After Attack From Climate Denier Lord Lawson

Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, hit back against climate denier Lord Nigel Lawson's accusation that the Bank had its priorities wrong by researching the impact of climate change in the insurance industry.

Speaking in the House of Lords' Economic Select Committee yesterday, Lawson said there were many issues in the banking industry, so “wouldn’t it be better if you focused your attention on those instead of engaging in green claptrap?”

Carney, however, robustly defended the Bank’s work, stating: “In the insurance business one of the top risks is climate change. Understanding those risks… is absolutely essential to discharge our responsibilities to oversee and supervise the third largest insurance market in the world.”
