Duke Energy Talking Out Both Sides of Its Mouth

Power generation giant Duke Energy can't talk the green talk, without walking the green walk on climate change.

Check out our online petition at the end of this post.

Business Week ran a story recently highlighting US Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) members who appear to be playing both sides of the fence when it comes to the issue of global warming and greenhouse gas reduction.

Case in point, power-giant Duke Energy who is a member of USCAP but is also supporting the "Americans for Balanced Energy," a coal industry front group that has undertaken a $40 million PR/lobby campaign to sell the virtues of "clean coal" and unproven carbon capture and sequestration technology to the American public.

As Frank O'Donnell of Clean Air Watch rightly states, "many of these companies want the image of being green but are putting their money on the other side of the issue."

We've started an online petition urging Duke Energy to drop its financial support of "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices" and start walking the walk on climate change.

I signed the petition, but I want to point out that at present, most of our electricity is generated by burning coal. Change on this front won't be rapid, might not even completely change in our lifetimes, short of fully supporting nuclear power ASAP. Here in the midwest, coal generates nearly 100% of our energy (I'm also a Duke customer) and without a major governmental infrastructure initiative, I don't see that changing any time soon. So, go write your Congress person or MP if you want to see some action, 'cause Duke doesn't see the profit in it.

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
