Exxon's "Rumsfeldian" position on climate change

Looks like ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson dusted off Donald Rumsfeld's PR play-book in explaining Exxon's stance on global warming, here's the quote:

There's much we know and can agree on around the climate change issue, and there’s much that we just don’t believe we do know…and we want to have a debate about the things we know and understand, the things we know about that we don’t understand very well, and the things we don’t even know about around this very complex issue of climate science. So that will continue to be our position."

Thanks for clearing that up Mr. Tillerson.

Here's the youtube version with Rumsfeld's famous "known knowns" explanation of the Iraq war produced by the very clever folks at Sirotablog.

Over at Real Climate we have been encountering more people like this just within the past day. One wrote in part, “… it seems so very complicated that I cannot support acting on the current knowledge.” In response to this, I said, “How much time have you spent attempting to understand the issues?… and out of curiousity, where are you posting from? Come to think of it, I most certainly would not ask you to act on the current state of your knowledge. In fact, I would rather you didn’t. I would only ask that you don’t get in the way of those who are clearly far more knowledgeable and informed than yourself.” In response to another, I provided a fairly detailed explanation of the greenhouse effect, then in response to someone else I explained the logic of debate on climate change with skeptics. The posts are 143, 155 and 160. Click on the link if you are interested… http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/05/the-weirdest-mille… Anyway, this is all rather new to me - but I am adjusting.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
