Friends of Science Investigation Eliciting Not-So-Friendly Reaction

Canwest News Service reporter Mike DeSouza blogs about the dial tones and not-so-nice responses he's receiving as he continues to investigate the "Friends of Science" and their connections to the Conservative Party of Canada.

One pretty outrageous exchange came when he called Mike Byfield, the editor of the Daily Oil Bulletin Magazine. After a few initial questions, Byfield told DeSouza that:

I'm going to drop out at this point... F- off."

So now Canwest, publishers of the National Post, is pissing off oil guys? I guess what we need in this country is a new newspaper chain, one that is not corrupted by a liberal bias like NP?

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
