National Post: Manipulating Rather Than Reporting the News

In the PR world, there are two kinds of public opinion polls: factfinders and manipulators.

You commission factfinding polls to get a legitimate idea of where the public stands on an issue. For example, if you are representing a brokerage house, you might commission a survey to find out whether (or how much) the Enron case will discourage people from putting their money in the market.

Lionizing Skeptics: National Post Defends Endangered Species

In a front-page on Saturday, the Joseph Brean made a 2,500-word case that the handful of Canadian contrarians who are skeptical about climate change are swell guys who are getting a rough ride from a brainwashed media. To his credit, Brean makes passing effort to address a couple of climate realities, but per policy, he carefully avoided speaking to any member of the scientific community who can easily debunk the skeptics' theories of clouds and solar forcings have caused the global warming that they can no longer deny.

Early Raves for An Inconvenient Truth

The early reviews are in for Al Gore's climate change movie An Inconvenient Truth, and so far the response seems to be effusive. For example, Claudia Puig of USA Today says, “What could have been mired in political rhetoric or techno-speak is instead illuminating, fascinating and sometimes frightening.”

Straight Goods on Climate Change Apologist Stossel

Georgia Straight Editor Charlie Smith weighs in with a whithering report on John Stossel, ABC's favourite 20/20 libertarian. Stossel is one of the guest speakers scheduled for the “Environmental Wars,” a Science Skeptics conference that will be held at the California Institute of Technology next week.

Don't worry, though, if you can't make the conference. The DeSmogBlog will be there, blogging live. Watch this space.
