Harold Ambler's Huffington Post climate misinformation-ganza

A new Huffington Post blogger named Harold Ambler has posted an unoriginal rehashing of the same old global warming denial talking points that we've seen over and over again for close to a decade now.

What's newsworthy here though is the venue.

Huffington Post has long been a place where this type of junk science has been debunked, not promoted.

This little coup has the climate skeptics all giddy and bloggers like Adam Siegel at Get Energy Now rightly ticked off:

Huffington Post published Harold Ambler’s Mr Gore: Apology Accepted which is notable in its breadth and audacity of disinformation, truthiness, and simply wrong-headedness. Literally books and hundreds (actually, thousands) of scientific studies and analyses have been written that provide the substance to prove Ambler’s words false. What is shameful, on top of this, is that this is not just the ‘false’ and misleading material, but its deceit in support of recklessly dangerous policy concepts that would hinder our ability to move forward to greater prosperity and a stronger American future."

The question for me is:  who the heck is Harold Ambler?

And what makes Ambler such an authority on climate science to so confidently make the bold claim that global warming is a lie? By the looks of his various bios smattered around the internet it appears that Ambler's background in the area of climate science is non-existent, he is the author of an upcoming book on a rowing team at Brown University and a musician.

Such an outrageous claim as: "It [global warming] is the biggest whopper ever sold to the public in the history of humankind," flies in the face of what the top scientific institutions in the world like NASA, the US Academy of Science and the Royal Society have been saying for years and its going to take a lot more than the ramblings of rowing guitarist to prove it.

Yeah, it's smart in the same way as publishing an article that says evolution is not real.

The only purpose it serves is to spread confusion amongst the igorant and uneducated, and reinforce denial amongst those who have already rejected scientific reality.

I suppose the article might have looked scientific to an editor. Here's a hint: If it wraps in the history of the world and leaps from topic to topic, it just may be phony.

Really? I haven't made a thorough study of the HuffPo, but I do know that it has acquired an evil reputation through its shamefully (or shamelessly) uncritical embrace of vaccines-cause-autism malarkey. That alone should destroy any claim to credibility. But maybe I'm too hasty. What has the HuffPo published in the praiseworthy scientifically clueful category?

beleidy. +1; Tue, 2009-01-06 16:03; Do not give them blog space

I think it is a fallacy to attack someone's logic by attacking their person. That this guy is a rowing guitarist does not mean that he is wrong. However, he is wrong. Should he present his "findings" or his criticism in some sort of logical manner, then we may be able to assess their validity or lack of.

In all casses if someone gets a moment of possible fame, then they will take it. And I think it is better to remove this incentive by not mentioning them more than we should. If they have presented some sort of false logic, the logic may be explained and then refuted. If you beleive that they are doing it for the fame, then do not express where their logic comes from. This way you have caused maximum damage, whoever finds their arguments somewhere else will not be fooled all while disincentivising them from using such arguments to gain fame.

Although the vast majority of scientific world claims that global warming is a trend that the earth is currently experiencing, how do we know that it is a linear progression? How do we know the temperatures will rise by, say, 1 degree every 3-5 years? What if it just happens in stages and the process will remain dormant over the next 10 years? Is that possible?

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
