Heartland "500" Still Co-Authors
As most of the blogosphere will remember our Heartland 500 story from the other week, I thought it was time for a quick update.
For those who don't remember, take a quick read of this quote and you'll get the picture:
I view that the inclusion of my name in such a list without my permission or consensus has damaged my professional reputation as an atmospheric scientist."
That quote is from Dr. Ming Cai, Associate Professor, Department of Meteorology, Florida State University. Dr. Ming Cai (along with many other researchers) was none to pleased being listed as a "co-author" on a paper produced by Dennis Avery, Senior Fellow at the Heartland Institute, titled "500 Scientists Whose Research Contradicts Man-Made Global Warming Scares."
A quick click through to the Heartland website today still finds that Dr. Ming Cai and his colleagues are still listed as "co-authors" of Avery's paper.
Just for the Heartland Institute and Avery's sake here is a reminder of the definition of "co-author"

It's now a "petition"!!!!!
As I said a while back, Alan Caruba now thinks the Heartland 500 list is a "petition": http://tinyurl.com/6nw2w5 . Yucks.
Also, Kevin, do you have a complete list of scientists who have replied to your mails? Do you plan to contact any more scientists?

Caruba
Thanks Frank, saw your comment the other day about caruba spinning it as a petition and have been meaning to get Richard to do a piece. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks
Anyway, again... do you plan to contact any more scientists?

Cavalier Approach to The Truth
The fact that the Heartland and Dennis Avery feel no compunction about claiming scientists as Co-Authors who were either:
Completely unaware of Avery's propaganda and completely opposed to his false claims.
or
Dead for some years prior to publication.
This indicates the cavalier attitude demonstrated by Dennis Avery and the Heartland Institute regarding distortion of the truth and science, which speaks volumes about the rest of the content of Avery's pseudo-scientific claims and the Heartland Institute and Avery's Hudson Institute.
Is this a trick that Avery learned from the repugnant S. Fred Singer with his harassing of the dying Roger Revelle? (google Revelle Singer Cosmos article)
Sounds fraudulent to me!
Co-authors
Although this list is obviously despicable, I believe the distinction means that they are "co-authors" of the papers that allegedly support the "Unstoppable Global Warming" thesis (which, of course, they don't), and not co-authors of Singer and Avery's book.
Nuance
I see your point, and would like to use it to point out that a lot of PR spin about finessing - the heartland frames the piece to appear that these people are "co-authors" and i think that most people would unfortunately not notice the nuance that you have.
Does anyone really care!
This obsession with HI is amusing.
I am wondering.
Does anyone really care or is this just another excuse to bash them.
The only significant issue is that 500 scientists attended the conference and nearly all of them disagree with AGW.
Anything said or done by HI is irrelevant.
Comments?
Gary's confused
Gary, I realize that after seeing so many "lists of co-authors" and "petitions" and "declarations" pumped out by the think-tanks, it's easy for laymen like yourself to confuse them with one another. Don't worry, Gary. We understand.
Unless you are the one who's actively trying to sow confusion. Then no.

Hi Frank
This is a first. We agree on something.
The opsession with HI is irrelevent.
The only important fact is that there is finally a Concensus emerging.
Just not in favour of AGW.
Gary, Gary
Now I see you're actively trying to sow confusion.
An honest inquirer would've asked, "what do you mean, I confused different lists?"
But you can't even be bothered to ask that question. Instead you just keep making statements which progressively mention less and less fact.
How about saying something intelligible about the self-styled list of "500 Scientists Whose Research Contradicts Man-Made Global Warming Scares"?
I'm sure you won't and you'll insist that we talk about something else, which of course will show the world what an honest inquirer you really are, now won't it?
I await your next unrelated inactivist talking point.

Huh?
I don't think I could make it any clearer or more to the point Frank.
The obsession with HI is silly.
The relevant fact is, 500 attended and don't agree with AGW.
There is a real Concensus forming finally.
How is that off topic?
Different 500
"The relevant fact is, 500 attended and don't agree with AGW."
You keep insisting that we should talk about a different list of 500 people.
How is that off-topic? Yeah, how indeed, eh...

31,500 !!
If you google "31,000 scientists" you will find scores of announcements that this great body of brainpower has rejected the theory of anthropogenic global warming (versus about 100 scientists who support it). Now I guess this new list from the Heartland makes it a total of 31,500!
Next, look up
sourcewatch Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine
The Calgary Herald recently ran an editorial seriously suggesting that this is the best current climate science.
Searching the 31k, you can find other news comments about the revelation of their names: "Although this will occur at the National Press Club in Washington, DC., it seems a metaphysical certitude media will completely ignore the event. Isn't it ironic, dontcha think?"
I see what you mean! Yes, it is ironic, because it is complete hogwash, and normally that DRAWS media attention.
Next, the 31k will sign a petition rejecting the theory of Circulation of Blood, parade to protest the theory that AIDS is caused by a virus, and revise PI from 3.14159265359 to the being equal to 3.
James Hansen and Ninja Inquisitors
"(versus about 100 scientists who support it)."
As any inactivist knows, there's only 1 scientist supporting the AGW theory: James Hansen.
Unfortunately, while he's just 1 scientist, he's sort of like Goliath, and the 500 + 400 + 100 + 31,000 dissenters are like David. Or Galileo.
What really happened, indeed, was that James Hansen went around calling the 500 scientists on the "Heartland 500" list and threatened to send Ninja Inquisitors to their homes if they don't recant. How Hansen can get so much power, and how anyone would believe that Hansen has so much power, is anyone's guess. Ah, I know! It's Al Gore the Antichrist!

Finally
Frank is beginning to get it.
Is Gary a Ninja?
No, I don't get it.
I don't get how you manage to get the information about the Ninja Inquisitors and still come back alive. I mean, if the Ninja Inquisitors are so powerful, shouldn't you have been silenced by now? Or are you yourself a Ninja?
Or maybe there aren't any Ninja Inquisitors, and you just hate "activists" for no reason so you make up nonsense about them.

Forgot 4000
You forgot the 4000 from Copenhagen as well.
Go on, avoid discussing the subject of this post
I said:
"I await your next unrelated inactivist talking point."
And right on the money I was. That makes me, what, a Level V Junior Goracle?
Go on, keep your unrelated talking points coming. Just avoid talking about the "Heartland 500" list.

Climate Change???
ASPEN, COLO. — Several spring storms that moved across the state last week dumped several inches of snow on top of leftover snowpack across higher elevations, allowing at least one ski resort to reopen for a weekend.
Aspen Mountain plans to reopen 45 acres, and possibly more, of intermediate, snow-covered terrain on the 11,212-foot mountain's upper reaches where the average snow depth is about 3 feet.
With Arapahoe Basin having closed for the season Sunday, Aspen Mountain would be the only ski resort open in Colorado.
