ICSC: International Climate Science Confusion

Our old friend Tom Harris, energy-industry lobbyist turned, well, turned into a badly disguised energy-industry lobbyist, has gone international, taking over as executive director of the International Climate Science Coalition.

The ICSC appears to be a New Zealand-based version of the usual suspects, a group of self-proclaimed experts who do little or no research on climate change, but who can always make time to serve on the advisory board of any oily organization that is trying to forestall action on global warming.

ICSC offers no information as to the source of its funding, so we would be delighted if any freelance DeSmoggers out there can offer any insight into the history and economic roots of the organization.

What's next?

And that would prove, what, exactly?

You never seem to be able to address the arguments of your opponents, so, as usual you resort to these sorts of ad hominem attacks.

This speaks volumes as to the lack of quality of your arguments. Though it doesn't exactly do your position much credit, now does it?

I kinda thought this was the more important part to focus on, from a scientific credibility standpoint that is.

How much research does Al Gore or David Suzuki do? Odd that you don't seem to have a problem with their credibility on that basis?

I don't get my scientific understanding from either of them. IPCC, is a good start, some papers from journals directly as well. I've read most of the report sections that interest me. Meaning peer reviewed science is my source of information. Not sure why you think those are my sources, but then you like posting about things you know nothing about.

The stated purpose of this blog is to "to clear the PR pollution that is clouding the science on climate change", ie, to point out when people like the ICSC try to dupe the public, catching out their colleagues in public relations. If you want to talk science rather than PR misbehaviour, go to the button in the righthand column clearly labeled THE SCIENCE IS CLEAR, where you will find the scientific material, presented by scientists.

On the contrary, denialists' arguments--almost always misrepresented facts, made up factoids, fabricated "evidence," or outright lies--are whacked as fast as they pop up using actual verifiable facts referenced by actual sources, but that doesn't stop them from using the same tired, oft refuted arguments again and again and again....

Denialism: "The position of governments, business groups, interest groups, or individuals who reject propositions on which a scientific consensus or widely-accepted historical evidence exists. ...
"The employment of rhetorical tactics to give the appearance of argument or legitimate debate, when in actuality there is none. These false arguments are used when one has few or no facts to support one's viewpoint against a scientific consensus or against overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They are effective in distracting from actual useful debate using emotionally appealing, but ultimately empty and illogical assertions." - Wikipedia

Frank Bi. +1; Mon, 2008-03-24 09:09; Come to think of it...

...now that absolutely explains why denialists are so darn obsessed with Gore and Suzuki.

Because actually discussing -- Heaven forbid! -- science and scientists will shift the battleground to the land of facts and evidence, so to speak, and that's a totally bad idea.

And besides, talking about scientists just isn't a good way to rile up the emotions. I mean, who ever heard of Claus Froehlich the Antichrist?

For those who don't know, little Robby here is using a clever-by-half diversion tactic called "playing dumb", something most triple-dig IQ bipeds stopped doing somewhere around the sixth grade because they realized they weren't fooling anybody. Robby still thinks he is.

Shockingly, a lobbying org's message correlates highly (and positively) with its leadership, ideological underpinnings, and financing sources, with the causality moving in the same direction. While I find his childish dissimulation charming to a point, Roberto el Pato blows it with his use of the term "ad hominem" and unsubstantiated bluster about "arguement quality". Such psuedo intellectual off-gassing is not only a sign that our little Bobsie twin finds himself several inches short of the g-spot, but also that he may himself be getting served by a passenger on the Rectal Canyon Express who happens to have his own interests regarding this group.

I guess what it breaks down to, Bob-o, is that we really can't take your arguements at face value unless you can prove to us that the four-finger geanie isn't rubbing out his three wishes on your little pooper.

Frank Bi. +1; Mon, 2008-03-24 02:13; The plot thickens

According to the "New Zealand Climate Science Coalition" web site:

"Four members of our New Zealand Coalition have been part of a team representing the International Climate Science Coalition at the UN FCCC meeting in Bali."

http://www.webcitation.org/5WYZtfpXz

So perhaps the ICSC is some sort of umbrella organization that encompasses the NZCSC (which, by the way, is mentioned on SourceWatch).

...or alternatively, the ICSC doesn't actually exist as a separate entity, and is merely another front web site set up and operated by the same puppetmasters behind the NZCSC. (A whois reveals that their web sites (nzclimatescience.net, climatescienceinternational.org) are both registered by the same registrant. Coincidence? Well, in light of the fact that the other web sites in .nz I found with a Google search all had different registrants... Caveat surfor, dulce et decorum, lorem ipsum.)

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
