In US South, Drought Spooks the Nukes!

From Newsday.com:

Nuclear reactors across the Southeast could be forced to throttle back or temporarily shut down later this year because drought is drying up the rivers and lakes that supply power plants with the awesome amounts of cooling water they need to operate.

Utility officials say such shutdowns probably wouldn't result in blackouts.

But they could lead to shockingly higher electric bills for millions of Southerners, because the region's utilities could be forced to buy expensive replacement power from other energy companies. Already, there has been one brief, drought-related shutdown, at a reactor in Alabama over the summer.

...with this one. As Joe Romm said, Water is the Achilles heel of nuclear. And it unfortunately does not appear as though drought-stricken areas are coming out of the drought any time soon.

I say shut them all down anyway! we have the intelligence to live sustainably in this world - especially in the us.

'Utility officials say such shutdowns probably wouldn't result in blackouts.' Probably will or wont... probably will eventually

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
