Inhofe and the art of exaggeration

Tags:
Senator James Inhofe continues his misinformation campaign with a recent stop in his home state of Oklahoma yesterday where he makes the outrageous claim that: “If we were to embrace the Kyoto treaty, it would shut down agriculture, military and oil production in Oklahoma...”

This is on the heals of some other very misleading and exaggerated claims by Inhofe, such as:

On Tom Brokaw's recent climate change documentary: "It kind of reminds . . . I could use the Third Reich, the big lie"

And,

His 2003 claim on the floor of the U.S. Congress that global warming is "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."

Not to worry though Inhofe is only the Chairman of the Senate Committee for the Environment and Public Works.
If you're looking for a more in-depth analysis of Sen. Inhofe and his ridiculous statements on climate change, check out this blog.

I am overwhelmed by the continued rush to embrace another Al Gore sham, his first being the China conection. A great many well qualified, experienced climatologists, have stated in no uncertain terms that man's contribution to global warming is miniscule at best. I do not have any problem with an effort to continue to assist our environment to return to a more pristene state. We continue develope new approaches to pollution control or elimination, the reduction(or elimination)of past site problems, and have made great strides at cleaning up our "act". NOT SO the Chinese,Russians, and the Indians. Yet the activists expect, no the demand, that the US pay the price for having been successful, that we move back in time to where? Lets try the 7th century.. Kent

Their corporate HQ as well as several refining plants are still based there. I suspect they play a disproportionate role in the state's politics.

Conoco Phillips moved all their headquarter operations to Houston, Texas following the merger. This was due to the CEO decree that Houston was more civilized, a city with more culture. Kent

Yes, and I am sure the $1.2 million in political donations from the energy sector doesn't hurt either: http://opensecrets.org/politicians/allsector.asp?CID=N00005582

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
