Multiple awards for DeSmog in the 2008 Green Web Awards

Roll out the green carpet!

DeSmogBlog has received 3 mentions in the 2008 Green Web Awards.

DeSmogBlog was named "runner-up" in the Climate Change Websites category, which is fine by us when you consider that the top 3 spots ahead of us were the UK government's ActOn C02, the BBC's climate change site and the Greenpeace climate change site.

DeSmogBlog received a third place prize for its work on exposing ExxonMobil's greenwash on climate change. And the runner up in the greenwash category was none other than our new affiliate site Coal is Dirty - a site dedicated to exposing the "clean coal" industry myth.

This is the first year of the Green Web Awards and the recipients were determined by surveying the opinions of the "web's leading environmental bloggers and social media users."

Thanks to all of you out there who contribute to DeSmogBlog with your comments, newstips and assistance - its all of your contributions that make this site what it is.

Onwards and upwards!

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
