The 100 Year Letter Project: Kevin Grandia

We asked friends of DeSmogBlog to write a letter to their great, great grandchildren about their vision and hopes for their world in 100 years, in the context of global warming. Here's what DeSmogBlog Manager, Kevin Grandia said:

Dear little kiddies,

Its great-great gramps, coming to you from beyond the grave (scary music).

Life wasn't much different for me than what I think your lives are like now 100 years later, other than the fact that in your world there is a realization that the continued use of finite, polluting fossil fuels just doesn't make any sense.

Do you still have iPods? Is Steve Jobs head still alive? If so, can you port me back one of the new Macbook Pros?

Of course, your iPods aren't powered with coal-fired electricity and Steve Jobs head is kept alive using a small format hydrogen fuel cell. I want to tell you though that the world I live in was an enlightened one, but it was a world in transition and human nature has a tendency to fight change and cling to any doubt as a reason to not embrace the new.

Many people were scared of the massive changes that needed to happen, and many more refused to move on. But I'm glad to say, that in the end the world made the right decision and that's why you today, way into the future, are enjoying a quality of life that I can only dream of.

Love,

Papa Kevin

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
