Western Climate Initiative Under Attack

A powerful industry lobby group called the the “Western Business Roundtable” is scheming to derail the Western Climate Initiative

You have to start somewhere. That was the attitude of a number of progressive US states and Canadian provinces when they formed the Western Climate Initiative (WCI), an effort to begin tackling carbon emissions in the face of endless inaction from their national governments.

The WCI aims to lay the foundation for a continental cap and trade system to limit greenhouse gases 15 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. The coalition currently has 11 member states and provinces representing 20% of the US, and 70% of the Canadian economies. They recently released their detailed recommendations for a regional cap and trade system that will be voted on for ratification by the member states and provinces.

Fraser Institute pitching to students in latest attempt to cloud global warming evidence

Having failed last year to discredit the International Panel on Climate Change, the Fraser Institute is hoping to have better luck brainwashing today’s youth. The ExxonMobil-funded organization has developed a global-warming booklet for distribution to high school students and teachers across Canada.

Allegedly aimed at “helping them understand the issue and make their own decisions about what actions are needed,” the manuscript was compiled by rookie scientists and retirees with strong ties to oil and gas pressure groups.

Global Warming Plays on Our Insecurities

Climate change could be one of the greatest national security challenges ever faced by U.S. policy makers, according to a new joint study by two U.S. think tanks.

The report raises the threat of dramatic population migrations, wars over water and resources, and a realignment of power among nations. The report was compiled by a panel of security and climate specialists, sponsored by the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Center for a New American Security.

NASA Chief Finds Support on Yet Another (Skeptics') Front

NASA's top administrator, Michael Griffin, speaking on NPR radio made some refreshingly sensible comments about the present global warming scare,” said Robert Ferguson, Director of the Science and Public Policy Institute. “Many rationalist scientists agree with him, clearly demonstrating there is no scientific consensus on man-made, catastrophic global warming,” said Ferguson.

aThe article, which also quotes Pat Michaels, Tim Ball, Robert Carter and other longtime skeptics, omits Ferguson's e-address: bferguson@ff.org. The “FF” in this case stands for Frontiers of Freedom, a longtime ExxonMobil-funded haven for footsoldiers in the disinformation war.

Latest IPCC report calls for world social revolution, says author

The steps urged by the United Nations-sponsored scientific panel to curb carbon emissions signal changes as comprehensive as the journey from gaslight and the horse-and-buggy to light bulbs and automobiles 100 years ago.

Broad coalition of cities and banks pledge billions to curb carbon emissions

The assembly of 16 of the world’s largest cities and five banks also includes ex-President Bill Clinton, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and several corporations. Under the plan, developed through the William J. Clinton Foundation, participating banks would provide up to $1 billion each in loans to cities or private landlords to upgrade energy-hungry heating, cooling and lighting systems in older buildings.

NRSP's Tom Harris power chugs the kool aid on late-night talkshow

In a recent call-in portion on an Ottawa late-night call-in show, Tom Harris, executive director of the energy industry front group, the Natural Resources Stewardship Project (NRSP), offers up some laughable quotes:

Harris: “There was 100 people that appeared in the [government of Canada's] Clean Air Act hearings that just wrapped up and I went through the list and there wasn't a single doubter out of 100 people, that was questioning the science of climate change.”
