Credentials

  • PhD, Physical Chemistry, Technical University of Karlsruhe in Germany. [1]

Background

Dr. A. Alan Moghissi is a a former official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He  formed the Institute for Regulatory Science (RSI) [1] in early 1985 and currently serves as its president.

According to an article at PR Watch [2], Moghissi characterizes environmentalism as a belief that "members of endangered species deserve protection and that, because there are billions of humans, humanity does not qualify for protection."

Working as an expert on "risk assessment," he appears on "expert panels" that tend to oppose environmental regulations. He has been an advisor or director to numerous right-wing think tanks and organizations including the American Policy Center's "EPA Watch," [3] the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow [4], The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition [5], and the National Wilderness Institute [6], a "wise use" organization that calls for abolition of the Endangered Species Act.

Stance on Climate Change

Moghissi supports numerous organizations that question the existence of man-made climate change.

Key Quotes

"The philosophy of most environmentalist groups is, in effect, that members of endangered species deserve protection and that, because there are billions of humans, humanity does not qualify for protection." [2]

Key Deeds

October, 1997

Moghissi was a reviewer of an American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) special report titled "Global Climate Change and Human Health" (PDF) [7]. [3]

According to the report, "From the standpoint of public health, stringently limiting such emissions at present would not be prudent. Fossil-fuel combustion, the main source of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions, is vital to high-yield agriculture and other practices that are fundamental to the well-being of the human population."

1990

Moghissi served on a panel created by the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute [8] in cooperation with Consumer Alert [9] and the National Consumer Coalition [10] to challenge the EPA's policy requiring asbestos removal from schools and other public buildings. [4]
