Sign DeSmog's petition to throw the Junk Science off Fox News

UPDATE 1: We're at 128 signatures and growing, not bad for the 1st day. I know a lot of DeSmog's friends are going to post stories, so the numbers should keep rising. Remember to email it to your friends!

Yesterday we reported that News Corp. CEO and Fox News owner, Rupert Murdoch announced that his company would join the battle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Murdoch stated: “Climate change poses clear, catastrophic threats. We may not agree on the extent but we certainly can't afford the risk of inaction…”

The first thing Murdoch and News Corp. can do to show that they are truly committed to fighting global warming is ending its reporting of misinformation about the science behind global warming on the Fox News Channel.

And the best thing you can do to help make this happen is by signing DeSmogBlog's online petition (click link) and then send it to all of your friends and have them sign it as well. Ask them to forward it on to their friends.

Steve Milloy (aka. “The Junkman”) is a regular Fox News columnist and tireless campaigner in the war against climate science. A quick read of Milloy's website and you will find the usual laundry list of scientific claims that have long been dismissed by the scientific community – the experts in the field of climate science.

Milloy was at one point the director of an organization called the Advancement of Sound Science Coalition (TASSC), which by many is considered the grand-daddy of modern industry front groups. TASCC cut its teeth on the war against tobacco smoke and later expanded into other areas like global warming. News Corp. CEO, Rupert Murdoch stated that: “Our audience's carbon footprint is 10,000 times bigger than ours … Imagine if we succeed in inspiring our audiences to reduce their own impacts on climate change by just 1 percent. That would be like turning the state of California off for almost two months.”

One of the first big steps Murdoch can make to show this commitment to climate change would be to ensure quality coverage based on the best available science.

Offer viewers the real scientific story.

That is not to say that other scientific opinions should be somehow censored, but instead there should be effort put into ensuring that these other opinions represent the current scientific thinking on the issue of global warming. The public deserves the best media coverage possible on this issue, so we can make informed decisions and separate the “spin” from the truth.

If Rupert Murdoch is true to his words and is committed to real action on global warming, then he will throw the “junk science” off Fox News.

This petition will be forwarded to News Corp. once we have 1,000 signatures - so sign up, email it to your friends and ask them to email it to their friends. 5 minutes of your time could really make a difference in ensuring quality news coverage on the most important issue we are facing today.

If you're so inclined, you can Digg this story.

Ah yes, the authoritative source, Michael Mann’s “Real Climate.” What man is adding to the atmospheric CO2 is CO2 since the end of the 19th century. If the forcings were there it would be much warmer than it is. Finally, how is it that a greenhouse gas that makes up such a small portion of the atmospheric greenhouse gases can be responsible for such horrendous consequences as the AGW group would have us believe? Could it be because the climate models are a wee bit biased towards CO2 as a causal factor? Could it be because the same models have no ability to account for the influence of water vapor in the form of clouds? Could it be, as one study has already said, that the impact of solar flare activity. BTW I could ask for no simpler words than “something else started the heating and the heating produces CO2 which adds to the heat.” If you read what your wrote, you contradicted your own position by stating that the heat produces the CO2. If that is true it is not a cause of the heating.

According to Lindzen, the IPCC embraced the notion of human caused global warming through CO2 emissions almost from the instant this idea began to gain traction in the media. Trouble was, says Lindzen, there was no research to back up the claim.

A lot of research has been done since and a significant portion of it casts doubt on the original idea of AGW and points to forces driving climate change that are far more significant than human-produced CO2.

But by the time these researchers reported their findings, the IPCC was already on record stating unequivocally that humans cause global warming and, in league with internationalists like Maurice Strong, it was using its bully pulpit to promote drastic cut-backs in CO2 output as a counter measure. The IPCC is now so politicized on this issue that it cannot be trusted, which is why some recognized scientists doing climate-related work have stated publicly that they want nothing more to do with the IPCC. The Gorewinian/Suzukian claim that the IPCC represents some sort of consensus among climate scientists is balderdash.

Even the IPCC cannot totally ignore what is going on and it has been forced to scale back its predictions for temperature and sea level rises because of climate research. Maybe someday the IPCC will be forced to acknowledge the role of sunlight and cosmic rays in cloud formation and the major role of clouds in determining global temperature. When that day comes, the environmental hucksters will have to find a new cause to keep money flowing to their organizations. And you can bet they will because you CAN fool some of the people all of the time.

Fox news occasionally achieves its vaunted fair&balanced, and steve milloy is one way. Murdoch says climate change is a problem, steve milloy says it isnt. Theres your balance. Milloy, if nothing else, provides a counterpoint. Your side of the issue has all the nonscientific blowhards it could possibly want. Supposing thats what milloy is, would you please at least grant us just this one? In the interest of balance?
‘Steve Milloy (aka. “The Junkman”) is a regular Fox News columnist and tireless campaigner in the war against climate science. A quick read of Milloy’s website and you will find the usual laundry list of scientific claims that have long been dismissed by the scientific community – the experts in the field of climate science. ‘Milloy was at one point the director of an organization called the Advancement of Sound Science Coalition (TASSC), which by many is considered the grand-daddy of modern industry front groups. TASCC cut its teeth on the war against tobacco smoke and later expanded into other areas like global warming.’ Congratulations, you’ve made the usual green effort to attack the man, not his argument. Whatever TASSC has done says nothing about the claims on Milloy’s website… and neither does your sad attempt to gloss over the fact that the “scientific community” is made up of far more scientists than the haters of humanity that you support. ‘One of the first big steps Murdoch can make to show this commitment to climate change would be to ensure quality coverage based on the best available science. ‘Offer viewers the real scientific story. ‘That is not to say that other scientific opinions should be somehow censored, but instead there should be effort put into ensuring that these other opinions represent the current scientific thinking on the issue of global warming. The public deserves the best media coverage possible on this issue, so we can make informed decisions and separate the “spin” from the truth.’ I’m having an awfully hard time parsing this bit of gobbledygook. You appear to be saying that while you don’t believe in censoring opposing viewpoints, you believe that only those viewpoints you support should be made available to the public. Then, you suggest that we should be able to “make informed decisions and separate the ‘spin’ from the truth.” Okay, I’ll bite: if all opinions published are to represent the “current scientific thinking” as you see it (i.e. the thinking of those scientists/environmentalists with whom you agree) what will we have to separate your so-called truth from? No matter how many times you repeat the term “scientific consensus” you cannot hide the fact that science does not operate by consensus. It never has, and never will. You have far more in common with those in the religious right than I suspect you will ever admit to. It is the religious right that challenges science on the premise that it can’t be right because it’s always changing. What they, and you, miss, is that science changes because it is a never-ending quest for truth. When you attempt to silence those who continually search for scientific truth, in favor of those who will accept any answer, as long as mankind is to blame, you are admitting to the world that your belief in anthropogenic global warming is based not on science, but on faith – faith in the evil of modern society. You’re welcome to that belief – but when you realize (if you haven’t already) that regression to the level where human beings have little or no impact on the world will mean the death of most people, I hope you’ll stand up for your values, and volunteer to be one of the first to go.
Actually, not a bad idea that last bit. Since a person at rest emits about 800 pounds of C02 per year, volunteering to the the first to go would be the equivalent of replacing about 4 incandescent bulbs with CFLs. Imagine what you could if politicians and lawyers volunteered to take one for ailing mother earth. Their grandchildren would be forever grateful.

Good content but hard to read. As someone from Desmogblog kindly pointed out to me when I posted an item that turned out to be a long, continuous, hard-to-read paragraph, just go to “Input format” below and select “Filtered HTML

Even if you aren’t handy with HTML tags, you can have paragraph breaks.

This has been a very interesting arguement. However there is still a few rather important points to be made: 1. Your beloved IPCC is a political entity and not a purely scientific one. This leads to scientists being paid to investigate the causes AGW. Not making an unbiased investigation into the causes of climate change. The first political figure to put money on the table to prove AGW existed was dear old Maggie Thatcher. She needed AGW as a way to control the Coal Miners in the UK. This started the trend of Government funding and backing of the AGW theory. With a rather baseless theory, though if made of glass would not be able to hold water (seeing as its closely related to the holes in swiss cheese), they decided to lump any problem with natural (or even unnatural) events like tidal waves and hurricanes (tidal waves can be created by well positioned bombs). This gives obvious cause of alarm on a monthly basis which they then discuss on the TV for years. 2. Al Gore is again a Political animal. He has been hired to champion an idea that has no scientific basis other than manipulating results incorrectly. According to the Hockey stick theory the global temperature has remained almost constant for almost 1500 years??? How can that be when there is mountains of data (a lot provided by the IPCC too!!) backing up the mini-ice age and the medieval warm period. Going back even further there are details of the UK being more like the South of France where vinyards were kept with ease rather than the difficulty there is now. Please for this theory to have any credibility it must take into account real data and real interpretations. 3. Mr Milloy does nothing but provide data to debunk the junk that is spewed out by the governmental fear machines. I hear on the news everyday something somewhere is the result of AGW. If this is left uncontested then it must be truth… Well if you get strung up for contesting it does that not mean the whole lot is being FORCED on the unwitting public? This poses a problem. As soon as there is censorship then there is misinformation which people are afraid the public might just pick up on and understand. However they forget that anybody who speaks out in such a society is more likely to be denounced (if not by their peers by the government or other controlling body) and by doing it themselves actually incriminate themselves in the process. 4. Then there is the final most important point. You trust the governments. Well therein lies the biggest problem. You trust governments that cry a war on terror when they themselves created the terror (9/11, the 7/7/05 London Bombings, to name but 2 events). You then trust everything spouted out of their mouths regarding AGW. The sheeple who believe this tripe can be forgiven to an extent because they have been taught to follow so well. But people who claim to be intelligent and have an extensive knowledge. Well there is no excuse for you… At the end of the day I accept your theory of AGW if you can provide proof of its existence, with information that is true, correct, complete, and not misleading. As long as it can satisfy that then I will take it under consideration. Until then I will hold the belief that the propaganda put out by the IPCC and many western Governments is just that, propaganda based on a baseless theory.
Great argument aainst AGW. Up to the point where you infer that 9/11 and the London transit bombings were done by “The Government”. Yeah….and there are no terrorists either. Just evil govermnent employees trying to scare us into giving up our freedom. If you believe that crap your just a different form of Sheeple. Piss poorly informed and full of hatred for “The Man”, you believe anything the left puts out. I suppose all the other bombings in Bali and Africa and in Saudi Arabia etc. are all the work of those govermnents and not Islamic terrorists. You have got to be one of the dumbest smart people I’ve ever encountered. Hatred of Bush and goverment in general have rendered you senseless when it comes to terrorists and the threat they present. I suppose you also think the moon landings were faked and that the bombing of the Cole was done by the Govermnet of the United States. Is the earth also flat in your little fantasy of intrigue and deception? Visti Jihadwatch.org. for a little enlightenment or suffer for your ignorance.
You are right about there not being a human cause for the recent warming of the earth. As for the rest of your post regarding 9/11 and the London transit bombings… Thank you so much! I haven’t had a good belly laugh like the one I got when I read your insane, far to the extreme left post. I suppose the moon landings were faked, and there are no terrorists anywhere on the planet. Wow! Again…thank you for revealing your gullibility and obvious lack of real world experience. (There’s nothing funnier than a stupid smart person!) If you think there is no danger in radical Islam then your either a Muslim extremist, or an idiot. There’s no point in being stupid and ill informed if you can’t prove it, and you just did a great job!

Obviously the best possible information to be presented to the public is one-sided and blindly sensational. Without presenting all sides, how can one claim to be educating ANYONE? Splashes of personal attacks and who-are-you-funded-bys are going to do nothing but convince people they know everything about the subject by watching 30 seconds of TV. It’ll also convince them that there’s a total consensus as to the hazards of what is evidently happening to the environment. “Real science” offers more than one dogmatic suggestion.
Not sure about the evidence for GW persay, as this is not my field, but readers may be interested in reading more about FOX commentator Steve Milloy from SourceWatch, a nonprofit that tracks & discloses issues related to campaign finance, corporate ties, and other potential ethical conflicts that influence public policy. From SourceWatch: “Steven J. Milloy is a columnist for Fox News and a paid advocate for Phillip Morris, ExxonMobil and other corporations.” “Milloy runs the website Junkscience.com, which is dedicated to debunking … global warming, DDT, environmental radicalism and scare science among other topics.[1] His other website, CSR Watch.com, is focused around attacking the corporate social responsibility movement. He is also head of the Free Enterprise Action Fund, a mutual fund he runs with tobacco executive Tom Borelli, who happens to be listed as the secretary of the Advancement of Sound Science Center, an organisation Milloy operates from his home in Potomac, Maryland.” “Milloy has spent much of his life as a lobbyist for major corporations and trade organisations which have poisioning or polluting problems. He originally ran NEPI (National Environmental Policy Institute) which was founded … using oil and gas industry funding. NEPI was dedicated to transforming both the EPA and the FDA, and challenging the cost of Superfund toxic cleanups by large [oil and gas] corporations.” “In January 2006, Paul D. Thacker reported in The New Republic that Milloy has received thousands of dollars in payments from the Phillip Morris company since the early nineties, and that NGOs controlled by Milloy have received large payments from ExxonMobil [3].” http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Steven_J._Milloy No matter your position on global warming, one cannot help but question the influence of large sums of gas and oil money on a person’s “impartiality” in evaluating environmental science- not to mention the professional ethics of someone who continues to lobby for the tobacco industry…
I think that the fact that this pathetic attempt at censorship has failed so spectacularly says a great deal about the intelligence and respect for debate that is inherent in people, not just Americans or those on the right. Here it is a month later an he has 309 signatures, some duplicates and some clearly signed by people that don’t agree but wanted to post a comment befitting this attempt to bring back the dark ages, when one could be jailed or burned at the stake for not sticking with the “scientific consensus.” People hate censorship and that’s why this petition is failing to attract signatures. (It’s not a left or right thing, it’s a what’s right thing. Science does not favor one or the other…Science should be free of politics. When it’s not people die. Witness Carsons rant on DDT. Millions died…a result of bad science.
What you say about Carson is bad science and bad history. She did not “rant” about DDT, but proposed a temperate approach to using it. And the “millions died” claim is just a lie.
