Media Matters Analysis Shows Keystone XL Proponents Dominated Media

A compelling new study from Media Matters for America reveals that proponents of the Keystone XL pipeline were granted far more time in the media than those who opposed it. As their study reveals, the majority of the coverage of the proposed pipeline regarded the creation of jobs, which was overwhelmingly discussed in a positive light, with most news outlets reporting only the industry’s own analysis of the jobs that would be created, even as reports repeatedly showed the industry’s job numbers to be false.

In general, the report shows that the pipeline issue was often covered in a positive light, with industry “experts” being quoted or hosted on TV news programs, as well as in print. The only two print outlets that the study found to have reported more negatively about the pipeline were The Los Angeles Times and USA Today. However, they note that the USA Today editorial board did come out in favor of the pipeline.

Here is a chart detailing coverage by type of media outlet:

Lord Monckton Gets Punked By Australian TV Satirists

YO - check this out.

Jet-setting climate change denier Lord Christopher Monckton has been revealed on Australian television as a fictional character created by comedy genius Sasha Baron Cohen, who also gave the world Borat, Ali G and Bruno.

Actually, that's not quite true.

But Australia's leading TV satire show has screened an interview with Lord Monckton where his interrogator, comedian Craig Reucassel, continually hinted that he thought the British hereditary peer was an alter-ego of Baron Cohen's.

The stunt was broadcast on popular ABC TV show The Hamster Wheel which "mourns the death of journalism" and is the latest offering from Australia's best known comedy satire group, The Chaser, who are famous for their risque set pieces.

Sarah Palin: From Climate Change Denier To Long-Winded Skeptic

In last night's interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson, Sarah Palin, shall we say, "bent the truth" regarding her stance on climate change. Jake Tapper has the scoop :

"Let me talk to you a bit about environmental policy, because this interfaces with energy policy, and you have some significant differences with John McCain," ABC News' Charles Gibson said in his conversation with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. "Do you still believe that global warming is not man-made?"

Newsbusters Outraged that ABC is Exercising News Judgment

In the tireless (and tiresome) pursuit of "Exposing and Combating Liberal Media Bias, NewBusters touts Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe's speech on the Senate floor Monday (Sept. 25), and then savages ABC's recent coverage of the topic of climate change.

In celebrating the Inhofe speech, NewsBusters picks up this quote:

"The year 2006 saw many major organs of the media dismiss any pretense of balance and objectivity on climate change coverage and instead crossed squarely into global warming advocacy."

Stossel and Scarborough love fest, also a misinformation fest

There is nothing more scary than two journalists interviewing each other, except maybe when both the journalists are armed with bad information and ideological blinders. In a bizarre spot last night on MSNBC’s “Scarborough Country” we were witness to ABC’s John Stossel and host Joe Scarborough spouting a continuous stream of PR spin and misinformation on the issue of climate change.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
