Calgary Foundation: Friends of the Friends of Science

Deep Climate, the foremost expert in all details of the Friends of Science (FOS), has a dandy post speculating on who has been financing the recent FOS radio advertising campaign.

DeepC has tied the FOS campaign to the Winnipeg-based Frontier Centre for Public Policy (FCPP), which shared the “credit” for bringing the ridiculous Christopher Monckton to Canada for his recent denial tour. The intermediary is Morten Paulsen, a Conservative Party fixer who has been deeply enmeshed in previous FOS adventures.

DeepC also connects the FCPP to the Calgary Foundation and then wonders if that foundation is now sluicing money to FOS through the Frontier Centre, rather than through the old University of Calgary slush fund run by Barry Cooper.

There is, here, still no smoking gun that demonstrates who is funding the FOS campaign, but the smell of cordite is hanging in the air.

Friends of Science; Friends of the Conservative Party

CanWest Global has followed up on an earlier story about the climate quibblers at the so-called Friends of Science, reporting that an FOS consultant was working as "an unpaid spinner" for the Conservative Party during the 2006 federal election.

Unpaid, that is, by the Tories, but on retainer for the Friends of Science, which was in the midst of a widely touted - but not legally registered - effort to affect the outcome of that election.

Long-time Alberta Reformer, a Friends of Science Booster

Long-time Alberta Reformer, Morten Paulsen, who most recently acted as co-chair for the 2006 Alberta/Klein PC party, is also the registered lobbyist for the anti-Kyoto attack group, the Friends of Science (FOS). This apparently fits well with Paulsen’s other lobbying activities: he is also registered to represent ConocoPhillips Canada, the 3rd largest oil refiner and exploration company in the Canada.

Given how quick FOS members are to deny taking money from oil and gas interests, we must assume that Mr. Paulsen’s oily overlap is purely coincidental.

NEWS ALERT: Conservative/Alberta PC Operative Backs "Friends of Science"

As Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein continue to lead the anti-Kyoto charge on the political front, it now appears that that Tory activists are also working the public relations campaign to muddy the waters — especially by backing the activities of the Alberta-based climate change denial machine: “Friends of Science.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
