Taxi!

New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced today that every yellow cab in the city would be a fuel efficient hybrid by 2012. Bloomberg plans to phase in the new taxis incrementally and estimates that the savings per taxi will add up to at least $10,000 per year.

While the plan will ultimately reduce carbon emissions by 200,000 metric tons, the city's overall emissions total a whopping 58.3 million metric tons in 2005 alone! Let's hope that this is one of many plans to reduce overall emissions.

Hybrids efficiency was downgraded recently so it seems that they are not as good as previously thought.

The Ford Crown Vicotria - standard Yellow cab vehicle, gets 14 miles per gallon. Hybrids get 38-60 miles per gallon. The numbers are nowhere close to being inefficient. With all due respect, your statement is sweeping and vague. I would be interested in seeing the report or article that supports your point of view.

Blammo! Way to shoot down his argument, Emily!

What’s that in litres and kilometres? :)

1 gallon = 3.785 liters.

1 mile = 1.6 km.

Doing math and saving the planet = priceless.

So 40 miles/gallon = 64 km/gallon = 16.9 km/litre.

14 miles/gallon = 5.9 km/litre.

My '94 Tercel does roughly 12 km/litre, at least for highway driving.

Here is a site where you can fiddle around with several fuel efficiencies:

http://www.tdiclub.com/misc/conversions.html

40 mpg = 5 L/100 km = 17 km/L

14 mpg = 16 L/100 km = 5.95 km/L

12 km/L = 28.22 mpg = 8.33 L/100 km

How to convert L/100 km to miles per gallon (mpg) or vice versa

To convert L/100 km to MPG, use the appropriate formula, depending on where you live:

In Canada and Europe: 282.481 ÷ (insert value) L/100 km = MPG (Imperial gallon)
(for example, if you use 8 litres per 100 km, you'd be getting 282.481 divided by 8 = 35.3 mpg)

The U.S. gallon is about 20% smaller than the Imperial gallon that is used in Canada and Europe, so a different formula is required. In the U.S.: 235.2146 ÷ (insert value) L/100 km = MPG (US liquid gallon)

To convert MPG to L/100 km, use the appropriate formula, depending on where you live:

In Canada and Europe: 282.481 ÷ (insert value) MPG (Imperial gallon) = L/100 km
(for example, if you get 35 mpg, then you'll use 282.481 divided by 35 = 8.1 litres per 100 km)

In the U.S.: 235.2146 ÷ (insert value) mpg (US liquid gallon) = L/100 km

Private Hire Vehicles (PHVs), also known as minicabs; Private Hire Taxis, available by pre-booking, not (legally) available for hailing on street; Taxibuses, also known as Jitneys, operating on pre-set routes for hire and reward, typified by multiple stops and multiple independent passengers; and Limousines, specialized vehicle licensed for operation by pre-booking.

Having once owned a former police Crown-Vic, I can attest to their reliability and indestructability. And having seen the size of an average NYC pothole, I'm guessing future archeologists will find more than a few Priuses at the bottom of them.

Dream on.

NOTE: don't have to use that type of language to make your point, final warning, next time we'll just ban your IP - Kevin@desmogblog.com

That is offensive. You should be banned.

Normally I wouldn't bother, but it just so happens that EH's post provides a perfect demonstration of the Assault on Reason that Al Gore's talking about.

First, he raises a potentially relevant question: is durability an issue with hybrids in New York, and if so, will

Then, to answer, he sidesteps any attempt to make a rational analysis, (like independently verifiied assessments of hybrid lifespans, or weighing a (potential) decrease in lifespan against public health benefits, reduced gasoline expenditures, etc...), and answers his own question based solely on what would make him sound like more of an arse.

Of course this is typical trolling, no surprise there. Trolls feel like they're scoring points with immature little comments like EH's, and since they have so much time on their hands, they have no problem gumming up a blog with their inanity. Not a big deal in a website, maybe, but the problem is something similar has been happening in the US media. EcoHitler is only copying what he hears on talk radio, or Fox Noise, or even CNN with Glenn Beck. This juvenile, playground language is what the network executives think audiences want, and it's how politicians think they need to talk to the people. And it's precisely how Bush was able to get away with a completely unplanned, horribly executed war.

Again, I think Americans are finally cluing in to this situation, and want to change things. It's why Bush has the highest-ever disapproval rating and why Gore's book is at no. 3 on Amazon (which is amazing considering who he is and what it's about.)

This is a good move by the mayor. Another option or idea for the mayor, is to invest in diesel cruisers for the NYC police department once they become more readily available. Law enforcement vehicles need instant power and acceleration for emergency situations. Hybrid cars would not meet the needs of the the New York City Police Department. Diesel cars being developed by GM and Ford would be a perfect option. Today’s diesel engines combine power with fuel efficiency and close to zero emissions. Both taxi’s and police cruisers are an everyday sighting on the roads in Manhattan. The yellow taxis as well as the blue and white police cars can become symbols of fuel economy and cleaner air.

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.
