Fake science, fakexperts, funny finances, free of tax

Modern anti-science was created by the tobacco industry in the 1950s and then used against climate science, often by the same well-experienced think tanks and individuals.  Tobacco anti-science is strangely entangled with climate anti-science, as the attached report shows in detail involving Fred Singer's SEPP, Joseph Bast's Heartland, and more.

Denial-a-palooza Round 4: 'International Conference on Climate Change' Groups Funded by Exxon, Koch Industries

In what has become an annual non-event, the Heartland Institute will gather the who's-who of the global warming denial network together in Chicago this weekend for the fourth International Conference on Climate Change

As in years past, the event is expected to receive very little mainstream media coverage.  The deniers like to think the reason is some liberal media conspiracy.  In reality, the lack of interest stems chiefly from the fact that this denial-a-palooza fest is dripping with oil money and represents a blatant industry effort to greenwash oil and coal while simultaneously attacking the credibility of climate scientists.

Despite the lack of press interest, the show must go on.  After all, the Chicago meet-up will provide deniers and industry front groups a chance to coordinate their ongoing efforts to smear the reputation of the IPCC, and they can reminisce about the Climategate non-scandal like boys in the schoolyard kicking around a rusty old can.

For insight into the underlying aim of the Chicago denier conference, let us take a look at the funding sources for the sponsoring organizations.

E-Mails Reveal Scientists' Contempt for Skeptics

Hackers broke into the electronic files of one of the world's foremost climate research centers this week and posted an array of e-mails in which prominent scientists engaged in a blunt discussion of global warming research and disparaged climate-change skeptics.

Our Friend CO2

One of the stupider arguments making the rounds in the media is that “carbon-dioxide-is-not-pollution– it’s life”.

In fact, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) produced a hilarious commercial saying just that.

Friendly footage shows how CO2 comes from little girls blowing dandelion seeds, and prancing gazelles. Then cue the ominous music: “now some politicians want to label carbon dioxide a pollutant – imagine if they succeed. What would our lives be like then?

Perhaps a bit of back-story is in order. The CEI has received a whopping $2,005,000 from ExxonMobil since 1998. Their point person on climate change is the notorious Myron Ebell who is so pathologically pro-oil he once claimed that good gas mileage is a mass killer.

So what are the CEI (and their funders in the fossil fuel industry) so worried about? After decades of the atmosphere being used as a free dumping ground for astronomical amounts of carbon dioxide, the federal government is finally considering putting some regulations on our friend CO2.

It is no surprise that this proposed policy is about as popular with Big Oil as a fart in a diving bell.

CEI: "Is Global Warming Burning Bush?"

It would destroy President Bush's legacy now to adopt Al Gore's global warming policies after pursuing much more effective policies for seven years. It is true that global warming alarmists are filing multiple lawsuits to use the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act to cause a regulatory trainwreck...

Newsweek Chronicles the Long, Relentless History of Climate Denialists

If you think those who have long challenged the mainstream scientific findings about global warming recognize that the game is over, think again.  The denial machine is running at full throttle -- and continuing to shape both government policy and public opinion.

CEI argues IPCC science without any scientists

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, who not even the likes of ExxonMobil want to be associated with anymore, has issued a media advisory today offering up their in-house staff as global warming "experts" available for comment on the upcoming release by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

With the IPCC report coming from scientists, you would think the CEI would be offering up scientists as global warming "experts.

Think again.

Here's some background information on each of their so-called "experts."

Exxon Acknowledges Climate Change, cuts CEI's funding

"We know enough now - or, society knows enough now - that the risk is serious and action should be taken."

Exxon Vice President for Public Affairs Kenneth Cohen

In an interview reported in the Wall Street Journal today, Kenneth Cohen began to shift Exxon's corporate positioning on climate change, accepting the reliability of the science and announcing that Exxon has stopped funding climate change deniers like the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI).

Exxon flak argues global warming good for us

The latest Decima poll shows rising concern among Canadians over environmental issues, but an Exxon-funded spokesman says global warming has been given a bad rap and it’s time everyone looked at benefits like milder winters.

Exxon lobby group named "year's most influential" in global climate change

The US Weather Channel's "climate change mission statement " reads: "Throughout the world, people are confused about climate change and global warming, [the Weather Channel] will provide a place where sound science can be heard."

As regular DeSmog readers know, much of the confusion and doubt in the general public around the issue of climate change and the discussion around "sound science" has been at the hands of industry and oil company funded front groups. Such groups serve the purpose of doing and saying the things a modern day corporation cannot ...
