Tim Ball: Ad hominems ad nauseum
How do you criticize politely someone who just doesn't mind whether or not he tells the truth?
The tireless Dr. Tim Ball, who will apparently go anywhdre on earth to deny climate change, has washed up on a UK television program called The Great Global Warming Swindle. Ball is heralded in the promotional material as a "Climatologist and Prof Emeritus of Geography at the University of Winnipeg."
An Emeritus professorship is an honour that Ball neither earned nor deserves. U of Winnipeg insiders say that the university administration has specifically asked that Ball stop advertising himself as such. Clearly, to no avail.
The mystery here is not just why Ball continues to overstate his credentials. The mystery is why organizations like the Natural Resources Stewardship Project continue to associate with someone whose credibility lies in shreds. Why would the energy industry lobby firm, the High Park Group, risk embarrassing its clients by continuing their association? (Mind you, the High Park Group is sufficiently embarrassed that its website client list doesn't offer a single name, but that's another issue.)

hmmm. I know lots of professional scientists in industry and in government. Several of these people publish infrequently, if at all, in the peer-reviewed literature; yet they are (sometimes eminent) scientists. How can this be ?
I know of a faculty called Engineering, where peer-reviewed publications are not a priority; frequently, work is contracted for industry. Maybe all the professors in engineering aren't scientists ?

No John, Tim Ball has been shown by the scientific community to distort facts and tell outragous lies, just like FOS and NRSP.

It's not healthy scepticism
John Dowell said: "Healthy scepticism, which should be at the heart of all scientific inquiry, is treated with contempt."
What the likes of Ball, Michaels, Singer et al. are doing is not "healthy scepticism." It is down right scientific fraud and distortion of scientific understanding.
FOS has (or used to) a list of myths. Each one is wrong. I will leave it up to readers to decide whether they are just a bunch of incompetents or whether it was deliberate.

John, Lindzen "has earned an international reputation" as another one of those on an obfuscation campaign. Don't forget, he's one of the first "deniers" who is spewing a line repeated often by Tim Ball: "If they can't predict rain a week from now, how can they predict the climate a decade from now?" It's an attempt to confuse the public who don't know any better into thinking that weather and climate are the same thing. Intellectual fraud or at least dishonesty.

Something to do with he didn't believe that AGW was causing the snow to melt on Mt. Kilimanjaro and the fact that the Anatartic ice is increasing. Neither disprove that AGW is ocurring. Better luck next time John, and try to stay up to date, six months is a long time in science.

And how could a person who understands climate convince themselves that past trends and changes mean that a new factor (us) can't possibly affect future climate...
He is not a distinguished scientist

That is the whole point; he is not a distinguished climate scientist. He re-read a number of old journals from the Hudson Bay Company records. That means that all of his "data" are anecdotal, not experimentally derived. This works in History, Geography and other Social Sciences but not in real science. His whole "distinguished career" is a figment of his vivid imagination.

He is not even a scientist
I doubt very much if you are a scientists yourself or are aware how science operates. Tim Ball is a geographer, which is part of Social Science.
One of the primary qualities in a reputable scientist is honesty. This, Tim Ball has shown an extraordinary lack of. Firstly, he misrepresents his qualifications and experience. Secondly, he misrepresents scientific information (AGW, ozone depletion etc.). Thirdly, he makes statements that are contrary to accepted scientific wisdom without offering any proof that what he says has been scientifically demonstrated. Anyone who tries to make out that he is a "distinguished scientist" is sadly lacking in common sense or is deliberately trying to distort reality.

I can't speak for Ian, but the answer to that question is an unequivocal: YES!
But don't take my word for it. You'll find ample evidence of Ball's prevarications here, in court documents filed for a libel case on this issue. Two of my favorite sections are Paragraph 9 in Ball's own statement of claim, where he reveals that he was lying about his length of service at the University of Winnipeg, and Paragraph 50 (d) in the Calgary Herald's Statement of Defence, in which they say that Ball is "viewed as a paid promoter of the agenda of the oil and gas industry rather than as a practicing scientist."
When you're done reading, I'd get that BS Detector in for a tune-up. it's letting you down.

Even try using google schoolar, limited but still better than nothing. Try a search of say someone like Tim Ball, then try Michael Mann, and see who the expert is. In essence, Dr. Ball....

I think the point that you are missing is that he is not well traveled in the scientific community for a number of reasons not limited to but including. The following was taken mostly from Dr. Johnson’s claims of defense.
1) He is not an active researcher in any global climate research, or any research for that matter as he hasn’t published in at least 11 years.
2) All his climate relation scientific publications have been related about his PhD thesis, in regards to regional climate change based on weather information in the Hudson’s bay area between 1714-1850. I.e. historical climatology of a specific small region. Also note his PhD was awarded from a facility of geography. His thesis says as much.
3) He has not given many talks at scientific gatherings, conferences, workshops, organized by scientific societies, indicating he has no active research program on any climate phenomena.
4) He has never been a member of any major climate science society like The Canadian Meteorological or Oceanographic Society, or any similar equivalent outside of Canada.
5) He has no publications in mainstream climate science journals.
6) He has not published any research in relation to global warming.
7) Most of his speaking is related to pork producers, naval associations, senior's groups, local historical societies and right wing organizations. Not exactly scientific circles.
8) He continuously changes his credentials, such as 32 years teaching, or was that 28, as a professor of geology, where as he only held the title professor for 8 years. For a period a website had claimed him to be an Emeritus Professor, which is a title awarded by his University and has never been awarded such title. Has also claimed to be a Doctor of Science, an honorary degree, but was never awarded one.
I could go on, but I think that’s enough. He was a professor of geography, though based on many of his other false claims has it been proven he actually taught courses related to climate science? Not sure on this one myself. Secondly see above about his expertise in climate related research, there is little there.
Furthermore AGW is supported by the scientific community, the reason it looks like BS to you is you haven’t spent the time to actually read real scientific research. For starters read the IPCC report from 2001. It’s a summary of actual research, where there are good understandings and where it is weak. Hence your belief in the message spread by Ball without true investigation into real science is why Ian points out you clearly are not a scientist.
