Tim Ball: Finding New Ways to Fudge His Credentials

CLICK HERE FOR AN UPDATED BIO OF TIM BALL (FEB.05, 2007)

In a September 26, 2006 letter to the Royal Society, Dr. Tim Ball, the leading signatory, identifies himself as "Professor of Climatology, University of Winnipeg."

Not quite. From 1988 until his retirement in 1996, Dr. Ball was a Professor of Geography at that university. He has not, since, had any official position at U of W or at any university. So, he is not now a Professor of Climatology at the University of Winnipeg and, arguably, never was.

It raises the question: if he is this cavalier about the factual accuracy of his own record of employment and credentials, how could he expect us to believe any of the rest of what he says?

There's an article in the Telegraph that refers to Ball as "a former climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg in Canada"

My research shows Professor Tim Ball was a geography professor from 1973 to 1996 teaching with a specialty in climatology. His article I read (written by himself) stated himself as former professor. Research your facts.

I hate to point this out, but the previous poster is right. The letter to the Royal Society is signed "Dr. Tim Ball Retired Professor of Geography (1971 -1996) University of Winnipeg". Where did the information come from?

Try looking harder. The older versions that they could not change are still there.

They changed

Dr. Tim Ball
Professor of Climatology
University of Winnipeg

to

Dr. Tim Ball
Retired Professor of Geography (1971 -1996)
University of Winnipeg

in one copy of the letter (NH Insider), in essence admitting that at least this part of my April, 06, letter to the Calgary Herald was correct. He still has the dates wrong, implying that he was a Professor of Geography when he obtained his BA in 1971, but he might mean that he was "at" the University of Winnipeg then, and perhaps working as an assistant teaching labs or marking.

I really am, and it is in geography, no less, where I happen to study climatology. How can I spin this for potential op-eds? There must be an equation for Dr. Ball's rationale. I guess if I am writing for the right audience, I can just say whatever I want. But I was thinking that I maybe could count my four years of TA experience as "early professor work." http://www.blogspan.org/

About the climate cover-up

About the climate cover-up

Democracy is utterly dependent upon an electorate that is accurately informed. In promoting climate change denial (and often denying their responsibility for doing so) industry has done more than endanger the environment. It has undermined democracy.

There is a vast difference between putting forth a point of view, honestly held, and intentionally sowing the seeds of confusion. Free speech does not include the right to deceive. Deception is not a point of view. And the right to disagree does not include a right to intentionally subvert the public awareness.

Although all public relations professionals are bound by a duty to not knowingly mislead the public, some have executed comprehensive campaigns of misinformation on behalf of industry clients on issues ranging from tobacco and asbestos to seat belts.

Lately, these fringe players have turned their efforts to creating confusion about climate change. This PR campaign could not be accomplished without the compliance of media as well as the assent and participation of leaders in government and business.
