Murdoch's Green Image Mucked by Fox News Misinformation

Here's a video produced by Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films chronicling the Fox News attack on climate science. These attacks continue despite highly publicized promises by News Corp. CEO and owner of Fox News, Rupert Murdoch, that his company would be cleaning up its collective climate change act.

Return of the Electric Car?

The Ford Motor Company, who has been criticized in the past by environmentalists for backing down from their alternative energy, vehicle development, announced that they would be selling plug-in hybrids in the next five to ten years.

This is the first time that Ford has announced a timeline for producing plug-in hybrids. The plug-in hybrid is seen as the best type of alternative energy vehicle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and gas consumption.

Chris Mooney on the global warming tipping point

In my recent conversations with peers in the science policy world (read “fellow geeks”), the same question has come up repeatedly of late: Why did global warming “tip”? How has the issue finally managed to go mainstream, so that even President Bush now seems on the verge of feeling its urgency?
Chris Mooney, author of the new book, Storm World, has a piece on Huffington Post today describing his thoughts on how global warming has moved into the spotlight as a major issue in America.

Powerful video by Greenpeace:

More Evidence of Global Warming in the Arctic

Canadian researchers are concerned about artic ponds that are quickly evaporating and global warming is said to be the cause. These ponds, that date back thousands of years, are shrinking and even drying up at an accelerated rate which will have highly detrimental effects on the surrounding ecosystem. Larvae, which feed on the ponds, provide nutrients for animals in the area as well as mammals that rely on the pond for drinking water.

This is one of many indicators that man made greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly altering the landscape of the artic including thawing permafrost, melting sea ice and temperatures that according to the IPCC, are warming at twice the rate as the rest of the globe.

Viva Vivoleum

Well known culture jammers, the Yes Men, who practice what they call 'identity correction' by posing as representatives of well-known corporations and organizations and making outrageous comments on their behalf, pulled off their latest installation of genius at the Oil and Gas Exposition 2007 in Calgary.

Posing as members of the National Petroleum Council, they unveiled Vivoleum, an oil product derived from dead victims of global warming disasters.

We don't have any video from the event yet, but here's a photo slideshow we found on Flickr.

MediaMatters launches Climate of Smear

Check out the newly launched “Climate of Smear: Global Warming Misinformation” section on Media Matters website. For the latest outrageous claims made by skeptic favourites such as Fox News pseudo-journalists and Glenn Beck, mediamatters.org is an excellent resource exposing content so blatantly manipulated that it would be funny if it wasn't so scary.

New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, announced today that every yellow cab in the city would be a fuel efficient hybrid by 2012. Bloomberg plans to phase in the new taxis incrementally and estimates that the savings per taxi will add up to at least $10,000 per year.

While the plan will ultimately reduce carbon emissions by 200,000 metric tons, the city's overall emissions total a whopping 58.3 million metric tons in 2005 alone! Let's hope that this is one of many plans to reduce overall emissions.

Do Nothing, Risk Everything

A recent report published in March by the Ethical Funds Company found that out of 48 Canadian oil and gas companies studied, only 2 were responding in any meaningful way to address the risks associated with global warming; Shell Canada and Suncor.

Using a wide variety of sustainability metrics, EFC scored each company to determine how well they are prepared to meet the increasing demand for environmentally and sustainably sound practices in the oil and gas sector as it becomes more and more clear that climate change is a reality and will have a significant effect on operations and investor relations.
