Last week, in response to some discussion that generated around one of my posts, I suggested that governments needed to be held more accountable in moving us forward into a more sustainable lifestyle. One of you, however, was not satisfied with my position and felt that individuals should be doing much more on a personal level to curb our consumptive lifestyle.

This cool idea, however, could make me eat my words.

A New Jersey man, funded by a mix of public, private and personal money, has created the first home in the US that generates all of its own electricity through a combination of solar and hydrogen power.

2006 word of the year? "Carbon Neutral"

I just found out that the Oxford Dictionary’s 2006 word of the year was ‘Carbon Neutral ’. This joins the long list of iconic lexicons from previous years, such as “podcast” and “blog” and beat out “funner”, “elbow bump” and “dwarf planet” for the 2006 honour.

According to Erin McKean, editor in chief of the New American Oxford Dictionary, “When you see first graders trying to make their classrooms carbon neutral, you know the word has become mainstream.” This begs the question, what exactly is “carbon neutral” and how do you get there?

Save Money: hybrids save $13,000 compared to regular cars

A new study based on “cost of ownership” data has been released, citing that hybrid cars trump their non environmentally friendly counterparts in 7 major vehicle categories. The study used all 22 hybrid models currently on the market and found, among other things, that hybrids retain their value better, incur less maintenance and repair costs and naturally have lower costs for fuel.
