Migratory birds are the “canary in the mine” for the Australia’s coastal zones, Eric Woehler from Birds Australia has told the House of Representatives Climate Change, the Environment and Arts Committee.

“I’ve been involved in coastal research and coastal management in Tasmania now for 30 years, working both on shore birds and sea birds and in the 30 years that I’ve been involved in I’ve seen at a state level average a loss of 50 per cent of the numbers of birds and the mix of birds,” he said.

McKinsey Report: $170 billion until 2020 to cool the planet

The McKinnsey Institute has released a new report finding that a $170 billion annual investment from now to 2020 could cut projected global energy demand in half and also get us halfway to solving the climate crisis. 

Here's the kicker, on top going a long ways to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the overall savings would from reduced energy use would be $900 billion by 2020 and none of the energy efficiency measures would require compromising the consumer’s comfort or convenience. And all this could be done with existing energy efficiency technology.

New NASA satellite map pinpoints worldwide sea level rise

According to new data analysis from the Topex/Poseidon and Jason-1 satellites, NASA is reporting that “warming water and melting land ice have raised global mean sea level 4.5 centimeters (1.7 inches) from 1993 to 2008.”

US oil company revenue higher than the GDP of Canada

On news of the massive profits reported by ExxonMobil today, ABC News crunched the numbers and has found that the combined revenue of the top 5 US oil companies was $1.5 trillion last year.

The news report points out that this is more that the total GDP of Canada, at $1.43 trillion last year.

Massive Profits, High Gas Prices and $33 billion in Taxpayer Giveaways to Big Oil

Over the next 5 years oil companies will receive $33 billion in taxpayer funded giveaways.

According to the report set to be released tomorrow morning by the Friends of the Earth, (pdf) the $33 billion in taxpayer dollars will come to Big Oil through tax loopholes, royalty rollbacks and research and development subsidies.

Canada Oilsand Lawsuit Launched

A lawsuit against Canada's oilsands has been launched by the Cree First Nations in Northern Alberta.

The lawsuit (pdf) pits the Beaver Lake Cree band against the governments of Canada and Alberta, asking the court to rule invalid the government authorization for thousands of petroleum projects on the band's core territory.
