James (Jim) Hoggan is one of Canada’s most respected public-relations professionals and the president and owner of the Vancouver PR firm Hoggan & Associates.

A law school graduate with a longstanding passion for social justice, Jim also serves as chair of the David Suzuki Foundation—the nation’s most influential environmental organization—and as a Trustee of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education.

James Hoggan is the co-founder of  Stonehouse Standing Circle, an innovative public-engagement and communications think-tank, and the former chair of The Climate Project Canada —Al Gore’s global education and advocacy organization. He also led the Province of British Columbia’s Green Energy Advisory Task Force on Community Relations and First Nations Partnerships.

James Hoggan is the co-founder of the influential website  DeSmogBlog and the author of two books,  Do the Right Thing: PR Tips for Skeptical Public, and Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming. He speaks, writes, and presents widely on public attitudes toward sustainability, climate change, and the environment.

Alberta Climate Change Plan: Triple Oil Production; Do Nothing; Blame Consumers

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach announced a “climate change plan” today that involves tripling oil production and waiting until 2020 before even beginning to curtail CO2 emissions.

“It would be very difficult to bring in real reductions, immediate reductions, without devastating the economy and the quality of life of Albertans,” Stelmach told reporters, without explaining why it is necessary to multiply Alberta's current $73 billion US in fossil fuel exports in order to avoid “devastating the economy.”

But the most offensive part of Premier Stelmach's political spin is the attempts that he, his Energy minister and his private-sector stalking horses are making to shift responsibility for action onto consumers.

Spin Resumes as Canada Eyes Emission Standards

Less than a day after Canadian Transportation Minister Lawrence Cannon announced the “possibility” of strict new auto emission standards, the newspapers are already filled with threats of dramatic car price increases. The spin season has begun again.

This flurry of threats and misinformation is destined to continue with greater intensity for the next 60 days, the period in which Minister Cannon said the Government of Canada will consult with the automotive industry and environmental groups about the potential for auto emission standards that meet or exceed the new American regulations.

We at the DeSmogBlog would like to acknowledge a mistake in “awarding” presidential hopeful Barack Obama a 2007 SmogMaker prize for his position on global warming.

Our effort to generate discussion about the policy position of the presidential contenders was wrong-footed. Obama's position is defensible - even if equivocal - and in that light, our criticism was unwarranted.

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has captured the inaugural 2007 SmogMaker Award for blowing smoke on global warming, the DeSmogBlog announced today.

Global warming is an environmental problem, not a political one. And people who try to ‘solve’ it with political or public relations spin are just making the problem worse,” said James Hoggan, co-founder of the DeSmogBlog.

DeSmogBlog a Proud CPRS Award Winner

I am proud to announce that the Canadian Public Relations Society has chosen my firm, James Hoggan & Associates and the DeSmogBlog to receive an award for demonstrating “the highest ethical and professional standards
while performing outstanding work.”

Automakers: 1% of the Solution; 99% of the Problem

The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association (CVMA) has launched a highly misleading advertising and PR campaign against new emission standards - especially targeting individual provinces (like British Columbia) that have the courage to push ahead of limp or non-existent federal regulations.

Saying that “new cars, SUVs and light duty vans and pickups contribute just 1% of greenhouse gases in Canada each year,” and claiming that “strict new standards are coming forward nationally in both Canada and the US,” the car makers say the provinces (and presumably US states) should stay out of the process.

This is misleading in its content and an abdication of automotive responsibility - a demonstration of why car makers, which could be an important part of the climate change solution, have chosen instead to stick with a PR campaign that is 99% of the problem.

National Post Attack on Gore a Last Gasp from Some Sore Losers

The fading National Post chose sides today: in a snarling attack on the Nobel Committee decision to award a Peace Prize to Al Gore, The Post went on to condemn other Nobel recipients, dismissing the work of Mother Teresa, the goals of nuclear disarmament and the heroism of UN peacekeepers - among whom Canadian soldiers have always played a major role.

The Post also badly misrepresented the judgment from a U.K. judge who has endorsed the continued showing of Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth, in U.K. schools.

What the Post has apparently failed to grasp is that, in any contest with Post business editor Terence Corcoran on one side and Mother Teresa and Al Gore on the other, Al Gore wins.
