Deniers evolution from ozone to global warming

Here are recent statements by vocal media impressarios and think tanks who spend their time, not in a laboratory, but in the popular media trying to convince the public that global warming is either not happening, or is not caused by our continued consumption of fossil fuels (oil, coal, gas etc).

Below each one, I have also provided an historical quote on what they had to say about the effects of CFC's on the hole in the o-zone layer. Notice any similarities?

Put the science where your mouth is

“If he [Bob Carter] has any evidence that [global warming over the past 100 years] is a natural variablilty he should publish through the peer review process,” said Graeme Pearman, a former former CSIRO climate scientist. “That is what the rest of us have to do.”

A well-stated and simple point refuting the words of the well-known and very vocal global warming denier Bob (RM) Carter. Often at DSBlog we have quipped that if the so-called “skeptics” are so “skeptical” why don't they get into a lab and prove it. Last time I checked, that's what scientists do. Anything else is just arm-chair quarterbacking.

While you're here, why not sign up for DSBlog's weekly newsletter?

Monbiot on the Channel 4 Swindle

Here's author and UK Gaurdian columinist, George Monbiot's take on the Channel 4 “Great Global Warming Swindle” piece.

DSBlog game: what's wrong with this picture?

What's wrong with this picture

Here's a fun, albeit easy, game of “tell me what's wrong with this picture” for you regular DSB'ers out there.

As many of you know this is Tim Ball , star of the recent “Great Global Warming Swindle” that is receiiving a regular thrashing right now, even by one of the scientists that appeared in the film. I blurred it a little to make at least somewhat of a challenge.

A Global Warming Swindle play-by-play

The UK Channel 4 documentary “The Great Global Warming Swindle ” has been touted by deniers and slammed by a lot of others, including one scientist who appeared in the film. Having taken a quick glance over the movie, the first thing that jumps out is that it's the same guys we write about on DSBlog all the time. There's nothing new here that we have not heard ad naseum from the same handful of global warming deniers.

Here's a few obvious points:

Putting lipstick on a Llama: Tim Ball, retired professor at the University of Winnipeg's department of geography, has magically turned into “Professor Tim Ball, University of Winnipeg, Department of Climatology.” Here's some more on Tim Ball.

$100 in iTunes to the first person to find the elusive department of climatology at the University of Winnipeg. I'll even give you the list of departments at U of W to make it easier.

DeSmog hanging with Chris Mooney

Here's a photo from a recent visit we had with Republican War on Science author Chris Mooney. Chris was in town to attend a panel discussion on global warming and the state of the media that was co-sponsored by DeSmog and the UBC School of Journalism.

Chris is back in Washington, DC now, putting the final touches on his new book, Storm World: hurricanes, politics and the battle over global warming.

Thanks DeSmog fans!

As many of you know, last night we co-hosted an event with the UBC School of Journalism on the topic of global warming and the state of the media. With over 200 people in attendence and some great panelists, including out of town guests, Chris Mooney and Ross Gelbspan, the event was a huge success.

Thanks to all of you who attended and contrinuted to the great dialogue. And a special thanks goes to Chris Mooney and Ross Gelbspan for taking the time to come out and share their ideas.

On another somewhat related note, I took Chris on a tour of Vancouver's Stanely Park to check out the damage caused recently by some seriously strong winds and here's what he had to say about that.
