Industry "think" tank cherry-picks to prove point

Here is a great example of spin, this time by the oil-money backed Media Research Centre and it's affiliated group “NewsBusters.” The goal of the intrepid team at Newsbusters is to “expose and combat liberal media bias.” Well, here's a little bias from News Busters themselves.

According to a recent UK Telegraph story, an upcoming report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will claim that “mankind has less of an affect on global warming than previously supposed.” A leading UK climate scientist explains that this downgrade is a refinement simply “due to better data on how the climate works rather than a reduction in the risk posed by global warming.”

Far from being the whole story, the Telegraph article goes on to paint a pretty grim picture indeed, but Newsbusters would like us all think something quite different…

Check out ThinkProgress for another take on this.

"Climate change" and "Kyoto" deemed no, no's for government scientists

Colorado's Rocky Mountain News adds two more bits to the government muzzling of climate change science file today. Pieter Tans, a senior scientist at NOAA's lab in Boulder says that he was banned from using the word “Kyoto” four years ago and more recently banned from talking about “climate change” at a carbon dioxide measurement conference.

Bye, bye Inhofe

The climate change denial circus created by Senator James “global warming is a hoax” Inhofe, outgoing chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee has finally come to an end, but not, of course, without some final choice quotes. As reported earlier this week on DeSmog, Inhofe took one last stab at sowing doubt about the realities of global warming and chose again to make the US media the target.

HuffPo has a good take on the Inhofe circus.

Oprah touts Exxon/Ford lobbyist as climate change "expert"

While Oprah is to be congratulated for her “Global Warming 101” special yesterday, it is discouraging to see Competititve Enterprise Institute's Marlo Lewis being touted as an “expert” in the science of climate change. As regular readers of DeSmog know, the CEI has been one of the leaders of the industry-backed war on climate change science. Further, Marlo Lewis is NOT a climate change expert, he is a lobbyist/PR pro with no scientific credentials. To be fair, Oprah also includes other non-scientists like Leonardo DiCaprio as a source on climate change, but last time we checked Leo is not part of an industry-funded campaign, he is speaking for himself.

Earth 911 launches global warming resource webcentre

For anyone out there wondering what they can do to help combat global warming, Earth 911 has launched a new section dedicated exclusively to Global Warming. Visitors to will now have access to comprehensive educational and actionable information designed to help them better understand what global warming is, and what efforts they can take to help combat its devastating effects.

Avery's oil friendly and "intelligently designed" skeptic message

Dennis Avery of the oil money backed Hudson Institute may find a niche for his junk science today when he speaks at Seattle's Discovery Institute. While the Discovery Institute may sound impressive, it is actually a very small think tank based in Seattle. Unlike the Avery's Hudson Institute, the DI's claim to fame is not being paid by big oil companies to spread misinformation, but is instead famous for it's epic battles to teach intelligent design in American public schools.

A little taste of Inhofe's Committee of Misinformation

Tomorrow morning, the Committee for Public Works and the Environment will hear testimony on the media's reporting on the issue of climate change. Thanks to DeSmog's vast information network and army of DeSmog Detectives, we have received advanced copies of the all of the testimony, but I think we'll just give you a teaser today.

Attached is the testimony of Dan Gainor who has absolutely no background in climate change and boasts a Master's Degree in Production Design. Mr. Gainor is a staffer at the Business and Media Institute, a subsidiary mouthpiece of the ExxonMobil funded Media Research Centre.

Shell CEO: debate is over, get on with action!

At a gathering in Dubai, Royal Duth PLC chief executive , Jeroen Van Der Veer, blasted the US government for not ratifying the Kyoto Accord and stated: “For us as a company, the debate over CO2 is over. We've entered a debate about what we can do about it.”

This echos similar statements by President of Shell Oil president John Hoffmeister.

Dear University of Virginia: fire Pat Michaels!

In Laurie David's great new quick read book, The Solution is you! , she pens a letter to the University of Virginia regarding Pat “the coalman” Michaels:

To: University of Virginia, Department of Environmental Sciences

Numerous media outlets reported that one of your professors, Dr. Patrick Michaels , has accepted upwards of $150,000 from coal interests and coal-burning electric utility companies for his advocacy against the overwhelming consenus on global warming.

Is this solicitation of funds from industries that pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gases in line with the university's mission?

Banks boost lo-cost loans for eco-friendly cars
