A little taste of Inhofe's Committee of Misinformation

Tomorrow morning, the Committee for Public Works and the Environment will hear testimony on the media's reporting on the issue of climate change. Thanks to DeSmog's vast information network and army of DeSmog Detectives, we have received advanced copies of the all of the testimony, but I think we'll just give you a teaser today.

Attached is the testimony of Dan Gainor who has absolutely no background in climate change and boasts a Master's Degree in Production Design. Mr. Gainor is a staffer at the Business and Media Institute, a subsidiary mouthpiece of the ExxonMobil funded Media Research Centre.

Shell CEO: debate is over, get on with action!

At a gathering in Dubai, Royal Duth PLC chief executive , Jeroen Van Der Veer, blasted the US government for not ratifying the Kyoto Accord and stated: “For us as a company, the debate over CO2 is over. We've entered a debate about what we can do about it.”

This echos similar statements by President of Shell Oil president John Hoffmeister.

Dear University of Virginia: fire Pat Michaels!

In Laurie David's great new quick read book, The Solution is you! , she pens a letter to the University of Virginia regarding Pat “the coalman” Michaels:

To: University of Virginia, Department of Environmental Sciences

Numerous media outlets reported that one of your professors, Dr. Patrick Michaels , has accepted upwards of $150,000 from coal interests and coal-burning electric utility companies for his advocacy against the overwhelming consenus on global warming.

Is this solicitation of funds from industries that pollute the atmosphere with greenhouse gases in line with the university's mission?

Banks boost lo-cost loans for eco-friendly cars

In a bid to do a little good for the world, some credit unions are offering programs where they will give you a car loan at the prime lending rate (currently 6%) if you buy a hybrid.

Supreme Court scientific circus act

As the Supreme Court global warming case enters its second full day, the circus act on the administrative side of the floor continues. Today, Deputy Solicitor General Gregory Garre, first admitting that he had limited knowledge of climate science, proceeds to state that there is a “likely connection” between greenhouse gases and global warming but that “it cannot unequivocally established.”

Inhofe's last stand

Sources are telling DeSmog that on Dec. 6th a last and final attack on climate change science and the media will be mounted by Sen. James Inhofe, outgoing chair of the Envrionment and Public Works Committee .

For his final committee comedy act, Inhofe has proposed an interesting line-up of witnesses, all of them, unsuprisingly, close to the fossil fuel industry-backed war on science. First up will be Dr. Bob Carter an Australian who's affiliations include the fossil fuel industry friendly (and funded) Institute of Public Affairs. Second up is David Deming, an “adjunct scholar” for the National Centre for Policy Analysis…

Public Service Canada "outraged" at government climate change cuts

While 10,000 EPA employees signed a petition demanding Congress address global warming – and the muzzling of government scientists, here in Canada the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada has followed up with their own climate change demands.

No thanks Al, we'll stick with the tiger

When Laurie David approached the National Science Teacher's Association (NSTA) to offer 50,000 free DVD copies of Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth she was surpised by the answer: “Thanks but no thanks.” In a recent Washington Post editorial titled “Science a la Joe Camel,” David, who is one of the producers on Gore's movie, explains that the rebuke was due to concern over that other “unnecessary risk upon the [NSTA] capital campaign, especially certain targeted supporters.” Any guesses about who those “targetted supporters” might be? I know, it's getting old, but I'm sure you guessed it: ExxonMobil.

Be a climate change scientist... while you sleep!

Okay, maybe not, but you can help climate change scientists by letting them use your computer at night, or whenever you choose, to run climate change prediction models. It's very simple, just go here to BBC's “Largest Climate Change Project Ever” and follow the instructions.
