Climate Science Deniers With Organization of Donald Trump’s EPA Pick Booted From UN Marrakech COP22 Talks

Read time: 3 mins

Climate science denier Marc Morano just got himself kicked out of the UN climate talks in Marrakech. Of course, that was probably his aim all along.

Morano stood in a Trump hat, next to a life-size cut-out of the president-elect, waving shredded copies of the Paris Agreement.

The stunt gave Canadian outlet The Rebel the footage it has been craving since it arrived, and got Morano kicked out of the talks.

But there’s a number of things that are weird about the story.

John Kerry Tells Marrakech Climate Talks Coal Investment Is “Suicide” As U.S. Delegation Ducks Fossil Fuel Influence Questions

John Kerry.

Today at the latest round of United Nations climate talks in Marrakech, Morocco, the nonprofit Corporate Accountability International (CAI) was finally able to deliver a petition to the U.S. delegation calling for the removal of corporate interests and the fossil fuel industry from the international climate negotiations process.

The petition included a demand for the U.S. to stop opposing a conflict of interest policy that would look to limit the influence fossil fuels groups could have on the talks.

Later that day, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry criticized the continued use of fossil fuels — with a careful caveat about carbon capture and storage technology — saying at this point, the world cannot “write a big fat check enabling the widespread development of the dirtiest source of fuel in an outdated way. It just doesn’t make sense. That’s suicide.”

It’s no secret fossil fuel companies will have to fundamentally change their business models if countries are serious about tackling climate change.

With so much skin in the game, it’s no surprise they find ways to try and influence climate policy at the highest level.

The international climate talks in Marrakech this week has provided the perfect opportunity for corporate lobbyists and climate science deniers to push their high carbon agendas.

Coal Industry Must Face ‘Managed Decline’ If Countries Are Serious About Paris Agreement Climate Targets

Read time: 3 mins

There is no role for new coal power if countries are going to meet their climate targets, campaigners today told the international climate talks in Marrakech.

The Paris Agreement signed by world leaders last year commits countries to limiting warming to two degrees above pre-industrial levels. Negotiators are currently meeting in Marrakech to iron out the details of how they will achieve this.

Analysts have long warned that meeting climate targets will mean leaving many of the world’s fossil fuel reserves in the ground.

Energy access is critical to lifting people out of poverty, but not if it is coal-powered.

COP22: Marrakech Conference Reacts to US Election, Pins Hopes for Global Climate Action on Trump’s Inconsistency

Read time: 4 mins

Just as the international climate talks in Marrakech were getting underway, the ground shifted beneath negotiators’ feet. While delegates are putting a brave face on matters, there is no hiding the anxiety in the halls of COP22 in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory.

Given Trump’s history of climate denial, participants are quickly manoeuvring to find a straw to grasp onto. And they seem to be coalescing around one simple truth: Trump is inconsistent.

Until proved otherwise, negotiations will continue in the hope that the President Elect is more climate friendly than he’s been letting on.

COP22 Entrance

It’s that time of year again. Thousands of delegates are descending on Marrakech for the latest round of climate negotiations. After last year’s blockbuster in Paris, how does Marrakech compare?

Early impressions of the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – or the much more manageable ‘COP22’ – are that it is certainly different.

Inevitably, there is not the same buzz as in Paris.

Big oil today outlined how it plans to do its bit to help curb warming to two degrees. The announcement comes on the same day the Paris Agreement formally comes into force.

Predictably, there remains a considerable gap between the companies’ commitments and the Paris Agreement’s goals.

Analysts say that to curb warming to two degrees, companies will have to leave around a third of oil reserves in the ground. So is that the revolutionary decision the companies today announced?

Revealed: What Ezra Levant Wanted His "Banned" Reporters To Do At Marrakech UN Climate Talks

Read time: 4 mins

Conservative Canadian broadcaster Ezra Levant is appealing to the public and his prime minister to intervene in a row with organisers of the upcoming United Nations climate conference.

Levant wanted to send three staff members from his “The Rebel” media company to the COP22 talks taking place next month in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Rebel had applied to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for media accreditation but, according to screenshots shared by Levant, the UN has declined the application because “advocacy media outlets do not qualify for media accreditation.”

DeSmog can reveal that Levant’s crew intended to film other journalists at press conferences and outside the venue, in an apparent attempt to expose what Levant thinks is a hypocritical media.

At a Rebel event in Edmonton in September, U.S.-based climate science denialist Marc Morano, who would be an “honorary Rebel journalist” in Morocco, told an audience member he intends to “put on a disguise” at the conference.
